Council Probes Electric Plant Failure and Plans

Town council discusses cause of Friday turbine failure at the electric light plant. A 24 inch steel bar found in engine No 9 prompted questions on standby reliability and scheduling. The committee suggests a rate contract with NR for energy, while Bateman proposes restructuring plant authority to ease the superintendent’s duties. Tax take for June-July 1929 rises to 26,181.43 with strong cash position, and roads work and milk inspections are noted.

Playground Activities Report by Organizer Hamilton

Hamilton reports playground activities on Mackenzie and Smith Jackson grounds proceed well. Morning sessions from 9 to 1 cater to younger children with group games, storytelling, and optional lake swims in hot weather. Title group folk dancing may start with more signups. Swimming instruction for boys runs 2 to 4 pm on Tue Wed Thu below the bridge ith Ave 5.W.

Barn Fire on Bennett’s Ranch Destroys Barn and Stock

A barn on Archie Bennett’s ranch burned down about 6 p.m. Thursday. The barn valued around £3,000 was destroyed along with a Jas Campbell stallion, a pony and saddle for three riders, six calves, and Whitmore’s harness and stable gear. Whitmore’s horses were saved. the stallion drowned or died after escaping into a creek. Nearby, the Dickson picnic drew visitors away. Concurrently, the Manitoba Telephone System delays pole erection on Burrows Avenue awaiting Commissioner Lowry, with calls for overhead lines removal and a possible park route to Swan River for direct service.

Destructive Fire Destroys Buildings At Winnipegosis

A fire broke out around 3 am Saturday at Winnipegosis, sweeping two buildings. It started in John Rognvaldson’s workshop and spread to J J Crowe Co lumber yard aided by a southeast wind. Firefighters formed a bucket brigade but could not save the structures, though they kept the blaze from reaching nearby creameries. Estimated damage runs to 827,500 with 26,000 borne by Crowe Co. the workshop was uninsured, the yard fully covered. The cause remains undetermined, though a steam boiler outside the shop may have contributed.

Air Mail Greetings From London Ont 1929

London Ontario reports greetings to Dauphin Man and Toronto via first air mail service. Kilpatrick mayor writes of closer municipal ties and shared governance. Dauphin replies with thanks and regrets unable to send via same route due to lack of service.

Provincial road to clear Lake area linked to national park

The provincial government started a new road from Strathclair north to join the Pominton road through Riding Mountain recreation area near Lake Audy and Char Lake. The route, known as the old Dauphin Branden trail along the Minnedosa river, promises scenic drives and heavy tourist traffic after completion under government engineer W H Campbell. Smith-Gopton wedding in Winnipeg sees Donalda Marie Geoften wed Horatio Beverly Smith of Regina on July 11 at All Saints Church.

Five men faced Magistrate Hawkins on a police charge day. One paid 10 dollars and costs for speeding. four paid for running with one light, two at five dollars and costs, two at costs.
