Gas restrictions take effect Monday at 7 pm as thousands join protests across Canada. Car owners curb fuel use while garages and workshops close under widespread owner-initiated agreements. Continued on page 6, col 5.
Citizens are urged to extend conservation to water as fuel restrictions loom. The note compares current shortages with last year’s critical stage and cites increased water use from the south air school and the Lown as burdens on supply.
German forces drive against Soviet defenses in four sectors near Lenin grad with a major push in Petrovodossk and heavy fighting around Smolensk. Berlin admits fierce counterattacks by Russians as Moscow reports a heavy air raid. In Asia, Japanese fleets move south toward Indo China as Paris and London weigh asset freezes and bases.
A new rural recruiting system in northern Manitoba shows promise as Dauphin acts as subrecruiting center. A three member medical board has examined 51 men this week with 53 accepted, 4 sent to the RCAF, and the rest rejected as unfit. Recruits include A H Aspinwall, Howard Keats, Michael Chupa and others from Dauphin Gilbert Plains Grandview Ashville Ste. Rose and Ford River. Major B Saunders leads the effort with the 103rd Veterans' Guard and Dr R E ____ leading the medical board.
Third Avenue South group dubbed the gang held a two day booth and side show near Third Avenue South and Main Street. They raised 7.14 on Thursday and total contributions reached 11.19 with neighbors supporting the effort led by Miss Margaret Leskin and featuring Florence Nicholson Florence Crawford Elsie Kalinchuk Marjorie Laidlaw Joan Gray Wilmer Gustofson Jimmie Laidlaw and Walter Gustofson.
A donated Mobile Kitchen Unit from the Patriotic Salvage Corps of Winnipeg will tour parts of the province. It arrives in Dauphin on Sunday July 26 at 3 p.m. and will be on the Bowman garage lot for one hour. Local Canadian Legion and Ladies Auxiliary will host guests and tea, with a short talk on Legion war services and salvage efforts.
A Cord car driven by FO L A Marsh of Dauphin slid through a log railing on the Rid ing Mountain curve and plunged ten to twelve feet into the roadside mood. Marsh and two women passengers escaped injury though three posts and four rail lengths were wrecked. Walter Henderson ferried them to town after the crash. The car suffered heavy damage and needs hundreds in repairs from the U S. A rear brake defect is blamed for the swerve on the hill.
The new Rotary Club executive led by President U S A Rogers and Vice President F Troendle named committees for the coming year. Community service chair W L Brander. club service chair E F Troendie. vocational service chair J G Somers. international service chair A E Reid. Also listed are sergeant at arms Dr C S Robertson, classification and membership Mike Zworon and J H Conner, program convenor Gerald Porter, fellowship chairs J H Dietrich and O C Knight, secretary J H Young, recording secretary T F Malcolm, music convenors R P Eastman and Jim Oliphant, and boys work F T Wright and M G Peebies among others.
A record field of 128 golfers teed off under a broiling sun for the eighth annual Wasagaming golf tournament at Clear Lake. Local favorites Tommy Warnock and Monck Steele opened in the first flight with 8 and 7, while Monck advanced to the quarter finals by midday. Francis Serase from Dauphin qualified for the first flight with a 90. Roger Watson shot 98 to finish third in the third flight.
Warm spell may trigger harvest in the district within a week. Local crops show little rust or sawfly damage but need moisture during the filling-out stage.

The Provincial Good Roads department plans extensive repairs on a two mile stretch of No. 5 highway east of town once road equipment now in use elsewhere becomes available. Hard surfacing will be ordered soon for the rebuilding project. Awaited is the release of equipment to scarify the south highway toward No. 10 S.F.T.S. No further repairs or oiling are expected on that road this year.
In Dauphin garage owners push a bylaw to restrict gas and oil sales to 7 am to 7 pm with no Sunday hours. Reporters note the town's lights dimmed, garages fear higher electricity savings, and residents adjust to earlier closing as darkness settles over streets.
