Lord Liffe arrives in Nicosia to help shape a liberal constitution while Britain resists full self determination for Cyprus. Turkish opposition and strategic military concerns complicate any move toward unity with Greece.
Preparations for the Dauphin Agricultural Society fair show commercial booths sold out early with all stands in the central hall. A six foot fence costing 4000 dollars will enclose the DMCC grounds. Enhancements include larger swine rings new sheep barn cattle wash racks and fresh paint-up efforts.
A commercial exhibition features a Prairie command military exhibit from Winnipeg and the Manitob a Cancer and Relief Research unit along with ten or more locally represented businesses. The event highlights tremendous growth of the industrial exhibition this year.
The venue expands six feet in width to accommodate a huge 1956 fair crowd. A thousand blooms cover a wall alongside potted plants, crafts, fruits, baked goods, and school art. Livestock displays include beef cattle, horses, swine, and sheep entries, with hunters and jumpers judged by district fanciers.
Dauphin joins Brandon Portage la Prairie and Carman as rally HQs for an enlarged inter-club 4 H event. The 1956 Fair features a standout girls clothing exhibit and a Monday parade from Mackenzie school to DMCC grounds. Premier awards include Bank of Nova Scotia trophy Hawkins trophy W L Bulimore trophy and Peebles trophy. Demonstrations in foods clothing and agriculture begin at 3 pm with club judging at 1 pm.
The Travellers parade rolls from Henderson School at noon Tuesday toward the fair grounds with about 30 floats. Keystone Kops, clowns, a girls band, and visiting bands join the spectacle as firms back the event with prizes totaling six dollars per group for bicycle contests.
Dauphin Fair race meet advances with a busy track prep for a big entry field led by 60 horses in high stepping trotters. Reg Kachanoski oversees pari mutuel operations with RCMP supervision. George Mooney handles classifications and acts as commentator as purses match last year across seven races per day. A 400 foot board and mesh fence encloses the track under a $4,000 upgrade plan plus a new public washroom near the track.
A five year old Holstein cow owned by Bob Boughen gave birth to an artificial insemination calf on July 11 in the Dauphin district. The event marks the first artificial insemination calf in the area. The Auphin Co operative Cattle Breed association, formed last fall, preserves frozen semen from Guelph Ontario with local facilities. Bob Boughen serves as president and W Volkers as secretary. The group reports ten breeder members and has supplied frozen semen to 110 dairy cows and 33 beef cows. Dairy cows include Holstein 100 Guernsey 5 Jersey 3.
The Ste. Rose du Lac fair on Saturday July 7 drew large afternoon crowds despite morning rain. Highlights included 600 plus industrial hall entries and top honors across livestock and dairy exhibits won by residents of Laurier Dauphin and Ethelbert with judges led by Mrs. Dowler and others.
The program lists a series of events at the Dauphin fair including rallies at 11:45 am and official openings, 4-H activities, a club concert, livestock judging, travellers parade, Dauphin band performances, several race meets, pony and light horse shows, stock parades, and grandstand platform attractions throughout the day. The schedule emphasizes band appearances, platform attractions, and timed contests.
The area board endorsed the building committee plan for indoor toilet systems at Gartmore and Valley Village. H Wolff to supervise insulation at Hamilton and painting at Ochre River. Mackenzie to have auditorium partitioned for temporary classrooms. Other projects include repairs at Whitmore and Henderson, desk sanding, bike racks, and interior painting at seven rural schools Baytre Am Fairview Dickson Listowel Mountview Old.
Cameron Gray, nearly four, fell into a nine inch well pipe at his home on Seventh Avenue NE. His mother Mrs. Gerald W. Gray and a six man fire brigade freed him after about twenty minutes, aided by a board that blocked his fall. Fire Chief Gord Harrison urged filling similar wells to prevent repeats.
Clarisse Spencer aged 15 from San Clara has been missing since Monday. She is described as blonde five feet eight inches tall and wearing pink pedal pushers or blue jeans. Believed to be hitchhiking to Winnipeg. RCMP contact San Clara or her father E. L. Spencer with any information.
Dauphin rural municipality council approved a 3945 budget for road works and public projects. Ward 2 tasks include Old Keld road gravelling and culverts. Ward 3 river crossing and road upgrades. Ward 6 inter municipal road and beach access. Ward 4 gravelling of roads. 18 culverts removed in Valley Village.
W S McPhedrain told Dauphin chamber members that Steinbach, population 3000, builds industry with a strong local credit union and merchant cooperation. He cited Monarch Wear Ltd employing 100, a car firm selling 350 new and 700 used cars, and over $1,000,000 in tire sales as proof that organized finance and collaboration attract business. He urged Dauphin to replicate Steinbach’s approach to become a leading Manitoba industrial center.
Dauphin council hears a by law to adjust the boundaries of the A group and C group school districts following consolidation. A petition from seven signatories seeks action on land parcels. Town solicitor notes amendments limit boundary changes to petitioned action. Second reading set for August 8 with final reading September 12.
