Heavy rains disrupted events at the Casey fair leading to mud soaked crowds and halted midway operations. Horse judging and jumping continued, organizers extended showtime to attract attendance. grandstand performances drew hundreds Friday and Saturday featured races fireworks and a large finale.
The Dauphin Rotary club announces its annual indoor carnival September 19 20 and 21 at the Dauphin Skating arena. Midway equipment is rented from E J Casey shows and operated by club members. George Reid is named carnival committee chairman.
The Dauphin Flying Club held a meeting in the G.W.V.A. hall on Tuesday July 16 electing officers with Alex Katz named as president and a vice president to be announced.
Nine T. Eaton delivery horses featured at the Dauphin fair as part of grand stand attractions. They were shown drawing vans and buggies Monday and Tuesday, paraded by John Conner and Theo Bodnar, with five handlers led by C. Tucker. The horses named Gold Dust Gold Star King Sergeant Stewardess Madam Charm Soong Chiang Mayling Chiang and Goldie. They travel by rail between fairs, with a palace car for the animals and a separate car for equipment.
A meeting of the newly organized Horticultural Society will be held Tuesday evening July 23 at the rural municipal office. Everyone interested in this community enterprise is invited to attend.
Racing at the Dauphin fair Tuesday evening featured a $600 stake and $300 purse as Western Canada’s top horses competed. Worthy Bar, owned by Mrs. E. B. Jackson and driven by J. W. Kealy, won two of three heats, narrowly fending off Lady McKinney driven by D. McAdam. Hollywood Silver drove by C. Cooney claimed two heats in the $300 purse, while Axworthy P. Direct led one heat for W. Webster. Weather forced a pause on harness racing with wet track conditions, though two flat heats were run winning for H. Swain of Grandview with W. Kilmister second.
Finance Minister Ilsley announced in the commons last week that copper colored five cent pieces, wartime coins that resembled pennies, will be withdrawn from circulation as soon as possible.
Dauphin’s second clothing drive chaired by M A Shields collected 6500 pounds of used clothing to be sent to Europe. The total, though lower than the first drive, met expectations and substantial contributions came from organizations and individuals who donated or helped with sorting and packing.
J L Allard of Allard and Dicks Motors was honored with a plaque for 25 years of service at a Thursday reception hosted by R W Dicks. A wrist watch was also presented, with a buffet dinner served by Mrs R W Dicks. Ford officials including Oscar Bjornson Horace Everett Len Rust and Barney Orr attended the event.
Clarence, an Onanoe resident, was convicted in local court for taking William Young's automobile without consent. He was fined 50 dollars plus 5.75 dollars costs to pay for damages. The car, stolen July 9, was found abandoned about 12 miles from Clear Lake later that morning.

After 18 years in Dauphin as a traveling agent Phil Cohan is moving his family to Russell to start private business. He and his wife Mary with sons Sidney and Jack left Dauphin Monday. Cohan has been active in the Commercial Travellers association, organized a travelers club, served as past president, and held executive posts. He contributed to winter carnivals and helped develop the bowling league into a major activity, earning provincial roll-off honors in Winnipeg this year.
The week saw temperatures reach 89.9 degrees on Tuesday with heavy trains of rainfall totaling nearly half an inch in the early hours of Wednesday. Local residents on holidays felt relief, as weekly precipitation amounted to three quarters of an inch with rain on Wednesday the 17th, Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday.
Dauphin commercial travellers schedule a tag day on Saturday July 20 after a weather pause. Proceeds fund a new playground in the town's south end.
The Dauphin Board of Trade will host about 250 Churchill excursionists on Friday Aug 9 aboard CN lines to Port Churchill. J N Mc Fadden K C will welcome the visitors with remarks by dignitaries. A light ice cream lunch and a Dauphin souvenir are planned at the station gardens lawn. The organizing committee includes A Rusconi Robi Scott J A Shields and W K Marsh.
Special prizes donated by firms and individuals awarded at the Dauphin Fair. LillaGold stables of Brandon won the champion saddle horse, awarded pen and pencil set from Stelck's hardware store. N Fekula and son of Ethelbert took best beef bull with a silver tray from W J Ward. H D Brewer won best cow three years calved with a Bank of Montreal pen and pencil set engraved initials. W J Ward received the silver tray for best litter of six pigs under six months from one sire. Mrs W H Durston earned the Blue Ribbon baking powder prize of five dollars.
Burrows Avenue repair by the town's road program started Tuesday under a hot sun with heavy equipment tearing up the street. The project aims to remove gravel and old hard surface, move earth to form an eight inch gravel base along the road, and transfer material to South Main as areas require built up. A heavy rain halted work temporarily.
The Hospital Aid Society collected more than $475 over two fair days selling tags on the grounds with an incubator display and nurse forms. First day brought in $180 and Tuesday, the big day, added about $300. Leaders included Mrs. M. G. Peebles and six other women.
Bill Thompson of the Brandon Golf Club topped 70 entrants in the first open handicap event of the season at Dauphin Country Club. He shot 76 in the medal round to beat Brandon pro Tom Grace by two strokes, with Wes Rourke taking third low gross. Dauphin players won low net and hidden hole prizes. prizes are to be claimed at the course. Thompson hosted a long-drive exhibition, impressing visiting players who want to return.
The fair’s grandstand filled with about 4000 on Tuesday, 800 on others, with overflow by the race track. Local groups performed including the Fork River troupe and Smith-Jackson Ukrainian dance, plus the Dauphin boys band and tiny tots from R E Browns youth services. Fireworks capped a weekend show while harness racing thrilled the crowd year after year.
