Dauphin Three Day Agricultural Fair Draws 10000

Dauphin’s three day fair drew about 10 000 visitors amid record attractions and education displays. Weather turned hot on day three but crowds remained, with a parade, horse racing, cattle shows, stock exhibits, and entertainment by Winnipeg clown C Bradshaw drawing large audiences.

Gilbert Plains Wins Baseball Tournament

Gilbert Plains dominates on the field to win the baseball tournament. In the semifinals Gilbert Plains defeated Tamerisk 9 4 while Minitonas beat Solsgirth 2 0. Other results include Dauphin, Solsgirth, and Plumas advancing through rounds with several byes in the first stage.

Hydro Prevails in Float Parade Across Town

Hydro wins first in the float parade with a back-of-truck display themed progress. Cruise Dairy takes first in the commercial class with a mulke truck covered in flowers. Monarch Lumber and Swift's Canadian Co. earn second and third. The Mountview swine club showcases a "Jet Propulsion" float, while other prizes go to a camouflaged Indian performer, a two-horse team, a four-horse team, and decorated private cars.

Progress on New Storm Sewer Projects Advances

Public works reports two storm sewer projects moving ahead. The Third to First Avenue NE line is over two thirds finished with pipe laid behind Main Street businesses. Pipe for Main Street water installation from Eight Avenue to the sanitation plant is staged and laid out.

First Day Of Fair Rally By Boys and Girls Club

The 567 members from 46 clubs gathered in Dauphin for the first fair day rally. An evening parade featured 45 club marchers and the Robert Hawkins trophy was awarded for the second straight year. Demonstrations covered judging animals and show-ring preparation with extensive displays on farm life themes and trophy achievements.

Injured Teen Hospitalized After Clear Lake Highway Crash

James Savichunas, 14, suffered a fractured clavicle when a car driven by his brother Barnis slid on loose gravel six miles south of Moon Lake. Passengers Hilda Schilke Elsie Crozier and John Crozier escaped with a shake. He was taken to Dauphin General Hospital.

Heat Wave Persists With Record July Temperatures

The tenth day of the heat wave shows no relief as daily highs reach 91.4 degrees on July 9, with 90.2 degrees the prior day ranking second in the season. Night temperatures remain high, keeping the spell wearing and wearying for residents.

Red Letter Day as Dauphin Launches Airmail Service

A Dauphin resident calls the first bag on the Winnipeg Dauphin line a red letter day. W. L. Bullmore, mayor. David Justice, postmaster. Ty Forbes, district inspector. H. Dauphin Man Dies in Snow Lake Drowning

Mervyn KR. Cram, 26, of Dauphin, was drowned Sunday at Snow Lake north of The Pas. He had left Dauphin for Snow Lake last week to work on the townsite project and had been with Western Grocers since August. Body recovered Tuesday and sent to Dauphin. funeral at Sneath's on Saturday at 3 PM.

13 Special Prizes Given Livestock Winners at Fair

Winners honored in livestock at the fair include R P Johnson of Wapah with a silver tray for the best shorthorn breeder's herd. A Shoemaker of Grandview earns a silver tray for the best litter of six pigs. Art Swanton of Dauphin receives a silver tray for the best two horse agricultural team. A B Anderson of Swan River wins with a silver tray for the best Aberdeen Angus breeder's herd. Bert Caldwell of Dauphin takes a cash award for the best pen of New Hampshire fowl. Additional prizes include oil products, a grease gun, and shields for dairy and sheep categories. Second prizes go to Nick Rath, John Shewchuk, and others.

Street Oiling Added to Road Improvements Plan

Backlog of street oiling is now included with hard surfacing in the town's road improvements. The program combines oiling with hard surfacing to catch up on a project delayed by postwar oil shortages.

Work halted on Burrows paving after soft asphalt found

Construction halted on Burrows avenue when the asphalt mix proved too soft. Samples were sent to government labs for analysis while repairs may be remedied without full removal. Half the street was completed and work will resume once faulty material is replaced. The town council expanded oiling of nearby avenues to curb dust for about 60 dollars per block.
