Commonwealth Talks Highlight Global Tensions And Malawi Independence

Delegates addressed world politics including attacks on Southern Rhodesia’s race policies led by Kwame Nkrumah and calls for sanctions on South Africa. Malawi celebrated independence ending 73 years of British rule as its new flag replaced the Union Jack.

4H Rally Displays Shine in Roblin 4H Building

Large crowds applauded the 4H rally as Durston Handy Thimblers earned the Bank of Nova Scotia trophy and prize money from National Grain Co. Four red ribbons and 14 blue ribbons highlighted the judging. Demonstrations covered senior and junior home economics and agricultural topics with multiple clubs earning top and reserve honors.

Andy Dugan Retires From CN Service After 29 Years

Veteran Canadian National Railways employee Andy Dugan retires after 29 years of service. Born 1905 in Lalin Poland he began as a laborer in 1935 and rose to yard foreman by 1945. He resides in Dauhrin with his wife and enjoys gardening.

Dauphin Rural Council Plans Pioneer Recognition Projects

Dauphin Rural Council approved Centennial projects under federal provincial grants. Plans include acquiring land and building at Stoney Freedom where East Central European pioneers settled along the Drifting River in 1696 and where the first Ukrainian Church service in Canada was held. A picnic ground is planned along Vermilion River in township 23, range 20W near Riding Mountain National Park. The council will negotiate with the lands branch to buy NE% of section 7 for the site. A cairn will be erected to honor the first white settlers and the municipality’s development.

Winnipegosis Housing Plan Gets Go Ahead

The Mary Ellis Memorial Home at Winnipegosis among five elderly housing projects approved in principle by Manitoba Welfare Minister John B Carroll. The $84 000 project includes ten single units and two double units named for Marvin Lytwyn and the Winnipegosis Elks lodge. Financing features a $22 000 provincial grant, $8 460 from the Elks, and remaining through a CMHC loan.

Will Visit In Eastern Canada on Centennial Exchange Trip

Allison Day and Eli Bay two grade 11 students from Dauphin chosen for Canada's Centennial exchange project will tour the East this summer. Allison leaves Winnipeg today for Halifax Nova Scotia joining the No 2 unit until July 27, while Eric Bay joins his Winnipeg unit August 15 and travels to Montreal with their group.

Fire Hazard Is High Now in Duck and Porcupine Regions

Forestry officials report four fires in the Duck Mountains and five in the Porcupine Mountains, all under control at reporting time, caused by lightning after light showers. new fires break out daily as the regions remain extremely dry and open campfires are banned. A fair segment notes strong showings in cattle, fowl, horseshoe pitching, and 4H exhibits with steady crowds and optimistic outlook for next year.

Nearly 900 4H participants and leaders filled Dauphin Fair grounds for Rally Day. A giant parade showcased 40 marchers and 12 floats led by standard bearers, with awards to Roblin 4H Home Economics, Gilbert Plains Beer and Clothing, and Durston Handy Thimb lers.

Dauphin Summer Fair Parade Claims Best Yet

The 1964 Dauphin Commercial Travellers parade, part of the Dauphin Summer Fair, drew large crowds along the route as 64 floats competed for prizes. Commercial class winners included Fashion Shoppe, B & B Farm Equipment, and Manitoba Telephone System with a tub scene. honorable mention to the Town of Dauphin and Chamber of Commerce. Comic class winners featured the Dauphin Commercial Travellers African Bar-B-Que and Bill Green with his Gone to the Dogs. honorable mention to the Dauphin Herald float. Club floats honored The Pas Trappers, the Dauphin Rotary, and the Dauphin Lions Club with honorable mention noted for the Herald display.

Farmers Urged To Harvest All Possible Feed Supplies

Manitoba farmers are urged to harvest all possible hay this summer to bolster drought prone districts. Hon. George Hutton notes feed shortages in the northwest and Interlake, and directs salvaging of alfalfa and sweet clover to aid livestock needs. Car Rolls Killing Woman Passenger Near Dauphin

A 1958 sedan carrying eight people rolled into a ditch about 6:25 PM Friday July 10 one mile south and one mile west of Dauphin. Mrs Ivonne Edger McCorrister 27 of Birch River died. Norman Edger McCorrister 27 was driver and survived with non serious injuries. An inquest began the same evening before Coroner Dr R E Dicks and was to resume Friday July 10.
