The Manitoba Telephone System begins construction of an automatic dial office in Pine River, a 25 to 30 foot wood frame building on First Street North and Reibway Avenue, about 60 miles northwest of Winnipeg.
More Than 800 4H members participate in a fair rally with stepping out and floats depicting 4H work. Swan River Busy Beavers win Hawkins Trophy for marching while Roblin home economics club earns a reserve. Ochre River 4H club wins, Barbara Stoughton of Gilbert Plains named rally queen, with Sharyn Henry and Donna Watson as princesses. Demonstration won by Assiniboine club, reserve by Gilbert Plains. Beef and swine judging results listed.
The Gilbert Plains 4H club retained top scoring honors for the second straight year. Organized in 1960 under Brian Lynch, a combined club formed in 1964 with home economics added to beef and heifer projects. Twenty-four members enrolled in 1964 with 17 market steers, seven heifers, and 10 clothing projects.
Dauphin's 1965 summer fair and rodeo drew the second largest attendance on record for three days Thursday through Saturday. A notable share of visitors visited the Industrial hall where Mrs. Wm. Neil, a prial and respected exhibitor, displayed.
Kenneth Nechka of Ashville won the Red Cross water safety contest open to provincial Junior Red Cross members. He is a grade 4 student at Halicz school and received a camera from D J Cumberland, secretary treasurer of the Dauphin branch. In September the school will receive the J Gurton Harvey award of 100 for books. Dauphin Summer Fair prize winners and other show details followed, highlighting top entries in flowers, vegetables, art, woodwork, and various crafts.
The rural municipality of Dauphin develops the Keld Centennial roadside park near the national park boundary. A kitchenette, toilets, dressing rooms, picnic tables, and gravel paths are installed as crowds enjoy picnics along the Robertson and Vermillion rivers. Beach area and river junction become a draw for local families.
Dauphin’s building activity rose to June 30 with 57 permits valued at 427 768 dollars, up from 50 permits and 333 523 dollars a year earlier. Home building leads with 78 668 dollars in dwellings and a 15 000 dollar five suite apartment permit, plus a 30 000 dollar compact apartments project by J Breslaw on Secon Avenue NW.
A new two year wage agreement for Dauphin-Ochre area school caretakers, represented by Local 857 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees, moves toward settlement. July 1 effective date. 48 hour week Sept 15 May. 40 hour summer period May 1 Sept 15. two weeks holiday rising to three with tenure.
Thousands along the Dauphin Summer Fair parade route praised the event as the best yet with well organized floats bands and enthusiastic crowds. Parade marshal Bob Fisher received thanks for coordinating entries including 4H and Rotarian floats and traveling showcases from Manitoba teachers.
Winners listed for ram, ewe, lamb and shearling classes led by J A Wallace and J Stevenson. Prizes include champions and reserves in ram and ewe divisions, with breeder names such as V L Jackson W F Jackson Mrs J A Wallace and Willeen Acres noted for birds, hogs and fowl prizes across multiple breeds and categories.
Wayne Enns of Dauphin Collegiate and Technical Institute is among eight Dauphin area students joining a Centennial student exchange. The grade 11 pupil, son of Mr and Mrs James Enns, will visit Kitchener Ontario for two weeks, after previously living in Steinbach.
