The school board weighs if Collegiate can admit nonresident students next fall with two staff vacancies. Principal Reid reports potential class reductions to absorb 20 nonresidents per grade IX and X and 15 in grade XI. Trustees worry about vanishing ratepayer funds to boost salaries, defer action pending vacancy fillability.
The North Dauphin area reported excellent views of a near total solar eclipse with clouds briefly hiding the sun at intervals. Five miles from Pine River, noted U S scientists observed the event under favorable weather as 47 degrees at 7 30 am. The cool, eerie light cast a bleak scene while residents watched from homes and the town edge. The clear sky aided data gathering during the spectacle and the three day agricultural fair benefited from the improved weather despite a dust shower Tuesday night.

Forty four cubs of the 1st and 2nd Dauphin Wolf Cub packs reached camp at Stony Point on Monday July 2. The trip and return were provided by commercial travelers and local citizens supplied transport for tents and kits. Camp construction was completed by volunteers, weather mostly fair, though rain had postponed the start. Archdeacon H E Brid assisted the cub master.
One of Dauphin's oldest ladies wear shops passes to new owners Mrs J F Kokura and Mrs S Olench after the retirement of Mrs F T Wright who led the business for nearly 40 years. The Mary Jayne Shoppe opened last Friday under the new partnership.
Wartime Prices and Trade board chair announces meat rationing will return with lower per capita allowances. Canada to limit to about 130 pounds per person annually and one and one third pounds weekly, with all meats rationed except fish and poultry. Meatless days start July 13. six weeks before effective. Coupons and tokens to control purchases. commercial slaughtering under permit from July 19 with new quotas balancing export and domestic needs.
The Dauphin pioneers and families held a July 5 basket picnic at the fair grounds attracting over 200 guests from Rosetown and Spy Hill. Neil Bliss led races and sports, with prizes awarded to Mrs. John Strand for largest family and Jim Friend as oldest pioneer. An unusual pipe prize went to Mrs. William Hall. Nat Bigham won two prizes as oldest pioneer and longest resident.
The first in a series to honor men and women from overseas service or discharged from active duty was held last Wednesday at Town hall. A variety program and dance sponsored by the Canadian Legion and Ladies' Auxiliary featured speeches, musical numbers, dances, and a social gathering with lunch. Lieut.-Col. Hershell Smith praised the branch, and Mayor Johnston gave a welcome.
Three employees of the C N R R C Robinson A Love and Noble Weir were badly shaken when their track motor car struck a cow near Valley River early Sunday. No serious injuries were sustained.
Excellent weather helped a three day Dauphin Agricultural Fair and Race Meet attract record crowds. US and Canadian horse racing boosted attendance while a district youth rally featured nearly 600 members and a monster parade. Prizes were awarded by Minister D L Campbell and gate receipts signaled financial success.
Communicable diseases in the Dauphin health unit area during June were mainly mumps with chickenpox also reported. Chickenpox appeared in Dauphin town with three cases. mumps totaled twenty four in Dauphin town and one in Dauphin rural.
