A list of exemption court decisions shows several appellants disallowed and many granted until November 1. Notable entries include Ellis Gordon Gilbert Plains allowed until Nov 1 and Ernest Watson Dauphin allowed until Nov 1. Also noted are Dauphin Grandview and Sifton cases with mixed outcomes and multiple disallowances across towns.
The Children’s Aid Society thanks donors including Royal Fruit Store and many named ladies for supporting five boys and two girls aged 2 to 14. Current needs are butter eggs milk and clothing for the home run by Matron Mrs WM Murrray.
A beachside dance and card party is scheduled for Friday evening next the 12th inst at Mr Scott's restaurant with admission set at 35 cents. At the chapter's last regular meeting the unveiling of the Honor Roll occurred with Mrs Martin present delivering a fine address.
A series of births recorded at Dauphin and Mountview includes a daughter for the Fultons July 7, a son for the Botes July 6, a son for the Millers July 7, and a daughter for the King July 1. Herald reports crops are good district wide. Star theatre shows Douglas Fairbanks in Head in South on July 10 and 11 with admission 25c. theatre pays amusement tax.
Weather this week brings large crowds to the lake shore where cottages fill up. Families including Jas. Watson H. V. Smith W. Mcintosh J. W. Johnston and others travel to camp. The pier is rebuilt and a store restaurant will open with a LO DE dance. Phonographs line the beach as fishing remains good and a pavilion site is prepared. West beach land fencing requires an extra mile drive.
Mr Wm Murray, chairman of the Foster Home Committee of the Children's Aid Society, visited the McCreary council to appeal for support. The council responded with a generous grant of 200 dollars to aid the society.
The adjourned meeting of the Poultry association was well attended last Friday night. President E H Walker was absent. 1st vice Mrs A E K Taylor presided. New members joined. bylaws prepared by a committee were approved. Membership fee set at 1 dollar. New directors elected: Mrs Ed Gorby, Mrs Harold Atkins, E J Darroch, Charles Fry. John A Gorby elected auditor. Patrons named: His Honor Judge A L Bonnycastle, Robert Cruise M P, Dr W J Harrington MA. John Kennedy, Bank of Ottawa manager, elected honorary president.
Jonathan Crawford, a former resident of Huron county Ontario who settled in Cumberland in 1806, died after a critical operation at Winnipeg General Hospital. He farmed there for decades and leaves a widow and two daughters Mrs. H. C. Nichol and Mrs. F. E. A. Nicholson. The funeral was held Tuesday at his residence with Rev. T. G. Bethel officiating and a large attendance. Pallbearers included Wm. Switzer and others.
The first gathering to form a Farm Bureau in Dauphin was held at the municipal hall on Monday night with local Grain Growers associations councils and clubs represented. John Seale chaired the meeting as Mountview Grain Growers’ representative while Charles Murray outlined aims to study local agricultural conditions and aid progress. A follow up meeting is planned for the 20th with school district delegates invited. A five farmer committee was formed to report on local labor conditions and propose relief measures.
Town Council met on July 4 with full attendance and approved a rate bylaw for the year, enabling two tax installments and a discount on 1018 taxes. Accounts approved include J Buckwold wood and Government telephones. Restaurant licenses granted to E A Rose, C H Joe, H Sing, Ching Sam, Joe Hong, Sam Dow. Chief Bridle and Wm. granted two weeks holiday. office staff also given usual holidays. Mrs J McKinstry urged grant to Returned Soldiers' Home Fund. Dan Hamilton requested repairs to a pipeline across his farm. Council adjourned.
Chief Bridle pursued traffic discipline and charged W. Gilmour and Geo Montgomery with speeding. Before P M Hawkins they were found guilty and fined ten dollars plus costs each. The effort aims to tighten regulations and enforce stricter road rules.
Late Viscount Rhondda urges Britain to build a large food reserve amid submarine blockade fears. He stresses Canada must maintain efforts to supply food for the Mother Country. The Al Fresco party at St. Pauls church grounds Wednesday evening drew a large, enjoyable crowd.
