Town authorities urge Canadians to open homes to alleviate a housing emergency. Residents with spare space should call 158 at the town hall employment office to list available accommodations at no charge and notify when space is filled.
An air force recruiting unit will be at the Dauphin fair grounds July 10 11 and 12 Flying Officer F K Tully of the RCAF will attend to receive enlistments and provide information for young men planning to join the air force for air or ground duties.
Judge Simpson appointed a rental committee of one to hear complaints under Wartime Prices and Trade board regulations. He will sit at the Dauphin court house on Tuesday July 15 at 11 o clock to hear complaints on rentals renewals evictions and owner change applications. Forms available from the clerk of the County court Dauphin and should be filled before the hearing.
Churchill told the House of Commons American occupation of Iceland may be needed to protect delivery of war goods to Britain and to prevent Hitler from using the island as a jump off point to attack America. Berlin decried the move as a stab in the back while Moscow said Germans were retreating on central and southern fronts. The report also notes Vichy authorized Dentz to seek armistice terms with Britain in Syria and that RAF raids targeted Hamm Muenster and other German targets.
Norman Astwood eight months in the Royal Canadian Navy has made him one of Dauphin’s veteran men in arms. Now on three weeks leave from his destroyer duty, he recalls tense encounters with German dive bombers and a submarine sighting as part of the daily work aboard Canada’s sea watch-dogs.
On Friday July 4 under Hon J L Ralston defense minister instruction Mayor Ramsden read Canada’s Call to Arms from the steps of the Dauphin town hall. The proclamation urged enlistment of able bodied men and warned of the country’s danger with messages sent to all cities towns and villages in the Dominion.
Mayor and council attended the proclamation reading alongside the R.C.M.P. in scarlet uniforms, clergy members, and prominent citizens marking the civic event.
Dauphin Ramblers captured the top prize in the Neepawa girls softball tournament on Dominion Day, defeating Roseneath 8 to 7 in the final after nine teams competed. Local players included L Semcheson M McDuff M and L May H Berkis M Magalos H Alf P Hawrysh. Concurrently the Coca Cola girls won the Swan River ball tournament.
Pilot Officer J. J. Lysecki now in the Royal Canadian Air Force has been granted leave of absence from his teaching duties at the Dauphin Collegiate Institute. The leave was approved at the school board meeting Friday evening before his departure for Toronto to take a link trainer instruction course.
Dauphin's 49th annual summer fair opens today with livestock entries including light and heavy horses, beef and dairy cattle, sheep and swine. Judges and guests from Winnipeg to Brandon will oversee judged classes as races and grandstand programs run Friday and Saturday. A civic holiday Friday allows Dauphin Gilbert Plains and Ochre River residents extra fair time.
J P Johnson former C N R superintendent visited Dauphin on Tuesday in North Bay Ontario style. He remains energetic and optimistic about western Canada noting work and prosperity as key to happiness. Johnson, greyer but still a dynamo, had engagements toward Calgary and with his wife and two daughters in tow.
