The Dauphin Boys and Girls band and majorettes led by bandmaster George Zradicka will travel Friday July 8 to the Travellers Day parade in Haryton. Members gather at the town hall at 6:30 am for the annual event now in its fifth year.
Dauphin and Pleasant Valley musicians including David Watson Roger Watson Richard Watem and Bev May left July 3 for the International High School Music camp at Peace Gardens on the US Canada border. Flight Lieutenant Cliff Hunt directs the RCAF bands. Dr Vern Watson will join July 10 as a board member. The first week focuses on Canadian twirlers and the second week features orchestra and chorus with about 450 young musicians attending each summer.
The Dauphin Valley Beekeepers Association held its annual meeting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. C D Castle in Gilbert Plains on Tuesday June 28. Officers elected for the coming year include President C D Castle Gilbert Plains Vice President Walter Mushinaki Ethelbertary Mrs EB Best Dauphin and Directors Edward Podolsky Pith elberrt James Isaac Rablin and Walter Durston Dauphin. A large attendance of beekeepers and wives was noted. Guest speakers included D R Robertson provincial apiarist and entomologist and K J Sellen Oak Bank previously chief apiarist for Manitoba. continued on page 7 col 5.
Dauphin's 1960 Fair Race Meet runs Friday and Saturday July 15 16 with parimutuel betting and a new mobile starting gate. George Jackman Art Halliday supervise gate operation. Jim Snedker returns as commentator. Purse events include a 2 mile feature for 450 open to all, plus multiple dashes and eight hingo games daily with proceeds to prizes. Reg Kachanosk oversees parimutuel operations under RCMP supervision with explanatory notices in The Herald.
The Dauphin chamber of commerce welcomes 40 Manitoba teachers arriving from Clear Lake on Friday July 8 for the eighth annual teachers tour. Citizenship certificates will be presented, a town tour follows, and a noon talk by Mrs. B C Goodhand on Dauphin history. The two week province wide route spans about 2 500 miles with stops in 25 communities from Winnipeg west to Portage la Prairie then to Flin Flon and beyond.
The month of June stayed comparatively dry and did not surpass records though temperatures hit new lows on June 30 and July 3. June 30 fell to 35 degrees, four below the 1950 and 1952 record, and July 3 reached 36 degrees, seven below the 1934 and 1942 records. Farmers welcome the cooler spell amid dryness and seek rainfall to relieve moisture shortages.
The Summer Fair entry office is in the DMCC industrial building to record entries for the July 14 to 16 event. Secretary Adam Nicholson urges early submissions to avoid congestion, with hours 9 am to 12 noon and 1 to 5 pm daily. Judging for the industrial hall is set for Thursday July 14, and the hall will stay open in the evening for public viewing. The 1960 fair is expected to attract heavy entries, so exhibitors should submit early.
The 14th Travellers Day parade on Friday July 15 will feature five bands on the route from Henderson School to the DMCC grounds. Participating groups include Shriners Pipe Band Winnipeg 25 pieces Grandview Band Enderlin High School team Dauphin Boys and Girls Band Dauphin Legion Pipe Band and Dauphin Legion Majorettes. The celebration begins at sunrise with Keystone Cops 40 pieces and their hoosegow march.
LCpl Alex Kuzyk and LCpl L W Nicholson were commended by the Canadian Army chief of staff for saving a man swept by a log boom near Victoria British Columbia. They wrapped the man in tunics and rubbed him to restore circulation as they waited for a tug and hospital transport after over an hour in the water. Kuzyk is married to Sylvia Bardinuk of Dauphin and has two children.
Premier Duff Roblin led the ribbon cutting at Rainbow Beach as a 103 acre park project in Dauphin entered its five year development. Officials from Dauphin and Ochre River praised the effort with federal Winter Works funding cited and plans to add grassed 28 acre fields for baseball and football as crowds gathered for the opening ceremony.
Robert Ernest Williams of KamSack, formerly Dauphin, was notified last week he is heir to an English baronetcy after Sir William Law Williams died. The line traces to a Dowager crest and Debretts Peerage records, with the estate including Devon Hills lands, several farms, cottages, manor houses, and part of Wrafton village. Williams, born 1924 in Winkler, worked for CNR in Dauphin then KamSack, married to Ruth Butcher with four children. His mother Mrs Tracy Williams has the peerage copy showing the line and crest.
The ultramodern Safe Way supermarket at the northeast corner of Main Street and Fourth Avenue North will open at 9 36 am next Tuesday July 12. Ad Baleaen, longtime manager of the Dauphin Canada Safeway store, will oversee the new shop and is busy preparing for the changeover at the start of next week.
Registration for Red Cross swimming and life saving classes at Ochre Beach proceeds briskly despite cool weather. The first course runs July 4 to 15, the second July 18 to 29, with life saving exams by independent Winnipeg examiners and Rotary sponsorship in Dauphin.
