Zionist Federation marks fifteenth anniversary in Winnipeg

The Canadian Federation of Zionists celebrated its fifteenth anniversary in Winnipeg on July 1 with US delegates from seven Canadian bodies. Clarence I. de Sola chaired the meeting attended by over 1200 visitors. Chief speakers included Dr. Ben Zion Mossinson, Dr. Sirlian, Louis Fitch, and Judge Shultz. A telegram from Prime Minister Borden expressed sympathy. About $30,000 was raised for the federation emergency fund at a mass meeting. Local attendees included Law F. Katz, Messie Eli Bay, David Lecter, Jacob Buckwold, and Harry Goldman.

Local aid and donations support Winnipeg convalescent home

The Secours National shipment of women and children’s clothing was sent at week’s end. Eggs for the convalescent home can be dropped at McDonald & Voigt’s. Last year over a dozen were shipped and gratefully received. Ethelbert women are thanked for monthly sewing and knitting. A concert raised 70 dollars, and thanks are extended to all contributors. The regular meeting is set for Saturday July 7 at 3 50 pm.

The Week's Casualties report two wounded soldiers. Private A. G. Peers, of the Seth Batt Dauphin detachment, recently from Gilbert Plains, was wounded. Private Alex Penny, of Dauphin, sustained a foot wound.

Captain T F Best recently returned from France will address a public patriotic service at the town hall Sunday evening the 5th. Mayor Bowman will preside. Best served as a YMCA officer and will share his experiences about local boys.

Construction activity downtown and area homes under way

The Clark block foundation is being dug and E Pilgrim holds the contract for the new creamery. Work starts on a two frame dwelling by Joseph Clark on Fifth Avenue. J G Dickie erects a frame home on the Cruise farm outskirts. C B Steen has Craigmile Bros. contract for a brick veneer house, 26 by 32 feet, in the Dickson district.

Home Economic Convention Opens In Town Hall

The Home Economic convention opens in the town hall on Friday at 9 30 a.m and runs for two days. A copy of the programme is available from Mrs McIntyre. On Saturday afternoon delegates tour the town by auto and depart the town hall at 8 p.m. Supper will be served in the park and picnics are encouraged with baskets.

The Red Cross notes donations from Baptist workers Dauphin Plains Spruce Creek and others detailing quantities of socks suits pyjamas and dressing gowns. Items were shipped to headquarters at peasy and received from La Ver andrye Chapter with listed donors and small monetary gifts.

Letter from Dauphin unit officers on war relief funds

Capt Midwinter writes to Mrs D Hamilton, SAS president, reporting that Dauphin 28th Battalion men request division of company moneys and $55 to each for sending comforts to front line troops or dependents. He explains unit absorption by Lithoserve Battalion and dispersal across five battalions, with three-fourths in France, and notes difficulties staying in touch. A nominal roll of NCOs and men who left Canada with the 26th Battalion is enclosed.
