Herald announces an early deadline by noon Saturday for July issue. Vertiers and contributors urged to submit copy to meet the altered schedule. No issue on July 8 due to staff holidays. publication resumes July 25.
Lorraine Tycholtz won the Miss Dauphin title in a water contest sponsored by the Dauphin Commercial Travellers association. The 64 275 purse insured her win with Irene Mymko and Dorothy Whig as runners up. Lorraine also placed fourth in Miss Manitoba. the Brandon Travellers association crowned Miss Doreen Duke.
The Manitoba Short horn Breeders Association Canadian Shorthorn Association and United Grain Growers back a regional Shorthorn show during the Summer Exhibition. The dairy and beef prize system is revised this year. A special Short horn article by E R honors pioneers who crossed the Atlantic to settle in this country and boost agricultural cattle breeding.
The racing committee led by George Jackman and Art Halliday expects up to 30 Thoroughbreds to compete, split between heats of pacers. Entries come from Swan River Melville Russell and Indian Head. Prize money totals 2500 with payouts tied to field size. pari mutuel betting continues on harness but not on running events.
The Dauphin Ochre area board approves two teacher transfers to other schools and six new staff appointments leaving one vacancy at Sifton composite high school. Tenders were read for repairs to two rooms at Whitmore. Letters from Minister Miller and Manitoba Teachers' Society official Gordon sparked debate on salaries and morale amid arbitration panel concerns.
Dauphin's newest business venture, Chab Photo Studios, opened July 2 on south Main beside Perth's. Wayne Chute and Dave Bates run the shop offering film supplies pickup and delivery and portrait photography, each bringing youth, local ties, and photographic experience to the venture.
The Negrych sisters Hope Love and Sylvia of Ashville earned recognition at the University of Manitoba. Hope, a third-year Pharmacy student, won $150 for top standing in exams plus several prizes including the $125 Frosst scholarship and the Manitoba Pharmaceutical Association medal. Love completed a four-year Arts History degree and authored a book on Canada’s pioneers. Sylvia finished a four-year science program and is engaged in research and bio work.
The text notes a forecast of much below normal temperatures and above normal precipitation from June 15 to July 15, but recent weeks show only 0.25 inches of rain over 14 days. Daily highs near 80 and brief sprinkles contrast with the Bureau’s earlier predictions while breezes from the south and west persist.
Gordon Shave reopens Gordon's Radio Shop as Gordon's Radio and TV at 11 Second Avenue N.E. after a fire on April 26. The gutted premises are fully refinished with new stock of refrigerators ranges radios washing machines and small appliances. The business moved from temporary quarters at Dauphin Products Ltd and opened Tuesday following a busy weekend.
The Quelph Plywood Company limited of Montreal withdrew plans for a Manitoba site in Dauphin citing that timber limits would force a pulp mill. Council backed the study and offered water rate relief and land access for a large plant employing about 75 workers with a cost of about one million dollars.
The Red Cross blood donor clinic will visit Dauphin on Wednesday July 17 with sessions 2 to 4 pm and 6 30 to 9 pm at the town hall. The Dauphin Legion will canvass homes to recruit donors through July 10 in support of the 113 hospitals served. Local Red Cross chairman R N Dodds expects a successful turnout in this province wide day.
