Heavy weekend rainfall and a Monday cloudburst overwhelmed the lower intake dam at Dauphin water supply. Both sluice gates toppled and about 100 feet of dam wall failed, estimated damage seven thousand dollars. Rainfall so far in 1935 matches the record of any three prior years.
A Winnipegosis couple Mr and Mrs Thor Stephanson celebrated their golden wedding anniversary with a family reunion at their home on June 27. They emigrated from Iceland in 1885 and have nine children and twenty four grandchildren. The event followed earlier flood damage and dam repairs along with recent washouts on the district highway. An unrelated railway incident saw Canadian Pacific No 10 derail near Dutton Siding with no injuries to engineer James Clyde and fireman E S Smith.
Grandstand seats are sold out for the last two sessions as Dauphin’s summer fair nears July 11 to 13. Rush seats remain available. grandstand reservations are limited for evenings. Judges named for livestock and cooking. two Ochre River teams to attend Brandon fair.
The thirteenth annual Manitoba Hospital association convention met in Dauphin with about a hundred delegates from nearly every province hospital. Hon. L B Griffiths and Hon. Ewen McPherson attended as guests of honor. J H Metcalfe was elected president for a fifth term. The meeting heard reports of tight revenues, held expenditures, and urged financial support. A banquet followed, and Griffiths spoke on health department aims toward prevention and unity. McPherson noted a projected provincial surplus not to be spent but to reduce debt.
Silo Burns When Hit by Lightning Monday Evening. Dauphin reports the worst electrical storm in years with a lightning struck silo at Wm Cruise dairy barn south of town. Fire brigade saved the structure. dairy cattle were pastured. Damages run to hundreds, insured. Crop damage appears limited though hail harmed nearby areas.
Town park lies under several feet of water after a rising river floods the area. Tourists in the camp are marooned on higher ground while locals recall the 1912 flood. Detour signs appear near Burrows Avenue bridge as authorities manage the scene.
The C N R runs a passenger extra from Dauphin to Swan River on Saturday July 13 leaving Dauphin at 7 pm. It will carry visitors from all points on the north line to Swan River to depart for home that evening after the Round-Up and Stampede.
