Flood Damage Estimates Across District Vary Widely

Estimates of flood damage across the district vary by site. Major costs cited include $150,000 for highways and bridges, $36,900 for the town water system, and extensive losses in culverts and detours. Rural losses hinge on crop damage, with farmers guessing 15 to 40 percent.

Engineer Estimates Ten Days To Repair Water Line Break

Town engineer E G Waller told the council a 420 foot main water line break would need at least ten days to repair. A temporary six inch line could be installed in three days, but supply may be insufficient for town needs. Forty workers in two shifts relay the 124 inch main while Edwards Creek is diverted. Water from Dauphin is heavily polluted and only used for non domestic purposes with typhoid vaccine stockpiled.

Mayor Wm. Bullmore told The Herald that paving equipment for Dauphin’s Main Street is en route and work will begin early next week. Burrows avenue paving starts Monday July 7 and will close for several days. completion is expected by Wednesday. The remaining Main Street section will follow as quickly as possible.

Rural Council Seeks Aid for Flooded Farmers

A rural council at a special meeting Saturday applied for Dominion government aid. It reported 100 percent damage to many district farmers with crops washed away, land eroded, and pasture ruined. A councillor cited drought aid precedents and urged assistance for flood losses.

Dauphin Three Day Fair Promises Record Attendance

Dauphin hosts a three day agricultural fair July 7 8 9 standard time with increased prize money new exhibits and a large expected turnout. Highlights include a Boys and Girls club rally on opening day a children's day rides reduced prices a $1800 harness racing purse a major livestock display a rabbit and dog show and new midway rides plus a grandstand show titled Variety on Parade.

A 15 mile by three mile flooded strip around Lake Dauphin swamped 45 square miles of farmland. Reeve Wm Cruise and engineers estimate crop losses at least 280000 dollars, with full district losses uncertain. Recovery time could stretch to a month as water levels decline slowly.
