Great War Veterans celebrated with ideal weather and a record crowd. Four to five thousand attended the Exhibition grounds for the afternoon program after a morning parade that drew praise. Cars were decorated with flags and many townspeople joined the event.
Children enjoyed a morning sports program in the park featuring races and other activities. The Gilbert Plains band provided excellent music, enhancing the day for all attendees.
A large crowd witnessed a demonstration before the Grand View hotel comparing ancient fire fighting methods with a high water pressure system. The event showcased techniques and equipment in a historic context.
Floats sweep to top prizes with 1st place for Patriotic entries by La Verandrye Chapter and Salvation Army. Business Floats award 1st to Burrows Lumber Co. and 2nd to Rexall Store. Decorated Cars earn 1st for W Greensides and 2nd for J W Johnston. Decorated Bicycles split money among Lawrence Crowe Ernest Batty Jack Johnston and Phillip Stark. Individual Clowns see 1st to Robert Turnbull and 2nd to Harry Stark.
A large crowd packed the field for a multi team baseball tournament featuring Beavers Gilbert Plains Grandview MecOrhy Mak inak Morronville C N K G W V and Pariuers. Grandview defeated Makinak 3 2 while G W V toppled McCreary 3 2 and Grandview beat C N R 6 2. The Beavers then beat G W V 7 1 and edged Grandview 3 2 in a final full nine innings. Umpires and track events followed with sprint and distance dashes and a fat men’s race wrapping the day.
Mrs Jos Haley secures a $10,000 verdict in Saskatoon court over the death of her husband Joseph Haley. He died at Hawke's Spur near Hudson Bay Junction in fall 1918 after being crushed between a loading platform and a freight car. Trial occurred June 25 with Bowman, McFadden & Caldwell for the plaintiff.
In a school athletics meet, winners include standing hop and jump with T H Ring and A D Russell among top performers, running broad jump led by W B Parkhill and A D Russell, high jump tied by F Sykes and G Porter, and hop step and jump won by A D Russell and A Russell. Relay honors go to Russell Bros with Rodger Bros second and Fraser and Newark third.
Committees labored hard and were thanked for their efforts. The day ran long as food supplies ran out toward the end. The Gilbert Plains and Dauphin bands provided the music while Billy Chapman drew attention as "the mysterious colored lady" with talks of a film project involving Charlie Chaplin.
During a Saturday morning thunderstorm a lightning strike hit S. Kory's store by the river, causing a fire that destroyed the building and contents. Loss is estimated at 20 000 dollars with 15 000 dollars covered by insurance.
The Armstrong Trading Co. versus J. P. Grenon and J. McInnes case from the King's Bench has been transferred to Winnipeg for the benefit of Winnipeg residents counsel. The case starts today Thursday.
Mr W Walker of the railway shops has been transferred and was honored with a farewell presentation on Wednesday night. J W Skinner returns to the position. Orangemen of Dauphin County plan to celebrate the 12th at Dauphin with lodges guiding attendance. Conservatory exams held in Dauphin on June 6 with several honors and passes awarded to local pupils of Miss Pearl M Tucker. A wedding occurred June 25 at the bride and groom's home in Dauphin with Ada May Warner marrying John Byron McMillan. attendants and families present. ceremony by Rev J A Haw.
