Pioneer Timbers to Hospital Founder Thomas Shaw Dies

Thomas Shaw a Dauphin district resident for 41 years and timber pioneer died at Dauphin General Hospital after a weeklong illness. Born June 20 1852 in Renfrew County Ontario he and his brother James built a four mill on Valley River in 1890 and their lumber business became Dauphin’s major industry. Shaw helped found Dauphin General Hospital in 1900 and will be laid to rest July 2 in Riverside Cemetery after a service at United Church conducted by the Dauphin Pioneers Association.

Council race to build park swimming pool and canoe waterway

Under Mayor Robson the council advances a park pool on the old Elks site with gravel dumping and continuous water inflow from the town deneser. Plans include a half mile canoe stretch and longer river bed, delayed by the dry season. A lead hole near 3rd Ave NorthWest will be filled to protect the dump from washing into the river.

Scarlet Fever Cases Decline In Dauphin

Health officer reports only one new scarlet fever case in the past week. Red quarantine cards are dropping as periods end, and authorities hope Dauphin will soon regain its usual clean bill of health.

Arrest Suspect in Winnipeg Osis Murder Case

Joseph Verhesky of Winnipegosis is charged with the murder of Peter Demschyza who was shot near Winnipegoosis around October 14. Verhesky to appear before Magistrate Hawkins this week for a formal charge and will receive a preliminary hearing next Monday. Police under Sgt Renton of Dauphin conducted the investigation.

School Levy Set At 294 Mills For Dauphin Budget

The Dauphin school budget is sent to the secretary treasurer and will be reviewed by the council next meeting. The levy for school purposes is $90 less than 1930, but due to land value declines it will rise about one mill from last year. The 1930 levy stood at 28 1/2 mills.

Three Winnipeg and Vancouver men convicted for break and enter

Harvey Jones and Joe Kraft both of Winnipeg and Frank Dunstan of Vancouver were convicted in the provincial police court before Magistrate Hawkins on charges of breaking and entering and stealing from John Gardner's store on June 17 at Dauphin. They pleaded guilty and blamed poverty. stock was found with them after police at Saskatoon arrested the trio, who had travelled together for about four weeks. Hawkins remanded them in custody for one week pending sentence.

Dauphin Hosts Air Pageant With Free Rides And Dances

The Dauphin Board of Trade and Dauphin Flying Club organize an air pageant on Wednesday July 8 at a field south of the Exhibition grounds. Ten new plane models arrive by noon with demonstrations of formation flying and passenger flights available. A jitney dance follows at Roseland Gardens and a reception banquet at Town Hall offers a chance to meet visiting pilots. Tickets help defray expenses with free rides drawn at 2 pm and 10 minute flights possible if skies permit.
