The secretary treasurer reports 1956 tax receipts reaching 100.4 percent of levy. Officials note realism in arrears figures and emphasize municipal financial discipline amid tan arrears payments and ongoing collections.
Dauphin Ochre area board tabled a motion to rescind resolution 8 from January 14 denying area board control of teaching staff appointments. Trustee Allard urged keeping local boards and area board authority balanced amid calls for closer cooperation and a vote is set for the next regular meeting.
The Dauphin Memorial and Centre annual meeting focused on urgent financing for the D.M.C.C. project. A proposed 10 000 building addition, a 2 000 youth building conversion, and 5 000 for completing the structure were discussed. The resolution urged the town to provide an immediate cash lump sum to the agricultural society to cover remaining payments. Treasurer Ex. Johansen noted 52 000 of the original 300 000 construction program remained, with 30 000 from Dominion grants. about 22 000 would need local funding. Howard D Campbell, president of the agricultural society, criticized aspects of the annual plan.
DMCC faces a deficit of 1478.41 for the year ending October 31 1956 the first loss in the arena five year history. W Cruise long time DMCC chair urges citizens to utilize all facilities while warning of administration difficulties as revenues from agricultural society curling clubs and hockey association bear the load. Cruise and W D Strang secured tenth terms on the board while calling for younger leadership as construction enters the home stretch of the project. Continued on Page 2 Col 7.

Improvements include fencing at entrances and grandstand, new rest rooms, sheep barn and hog barn facilities, wash racks, judging pens, chutes, painting on six barns and youth building, upgraded power lines, and numerous smaller upgrades boosting efficiency.
Miss Helen Mirsh warned at the DMCC annual meeting that revenues must cover costs or expansion of the Dauphin Memorial and Community Centre will be abandoned. The report notes non profit operations rely on volunteers and public support or taxes, detailing past year activities and youth facility upgrade costs about 2000 dollars.

Treasurer E Johansen cites limited revenue from curling and agriculture and notes capital needs funded by a town levy and Dominion grants. Max Helpman returns to headline Othello staged by the Canadian Players in Dauphin next Monday evening February 4 at town hall. Tony van Bridge plays Othello with Dawn Greenucgn as Desdemona and Douglas Campbell directing and acting Brabantio and Gratiano. The Liars club sponsors the Shakespearean production.
Turn on Your 5 Tonight for Canvassers schedules a monster town wide March of Dimes drive with 110 canvassers targeting $3000. Ed Patement, campaign chairman, optimistic on progress after schools and a radio marathon raised over $700. Each canvasser covers a street, with collections counted at TOOF hall by 10 p.m.
The week saw temperatures plunge to minus 32.2 degrees on Monday January 28 with a seven inch snowfall Saturday and Sunday. Winds peaked at 40 mph with mixed readings across the period. The week’s minimum averaged minus 23.1 below, about 1.4 degrees below last year’s mark.
A Hungarian welcoming party led by Chas Volk and local immigration officer O C Kerr greeted nine Hungarian men arriving in sub zero weather at the CNR depot. Ladies of the IODE served coffee and doughnuts as the group visited the Hamilton hotel then Saint Winters church. Two returnees Sandor Rozsa and Bela Nemeth added local flavor. The men bring trades from shoemaking to mining with varied years of experience.
Public interest in a college dance controversy prompted the area board to endorse a statement by vice chairman W. H. Ramp ton. The report noted staff attendance limits and urged parental cooperation to ensure high school dances remain a wholesome, enjoyable activity for students and families.
The Dauphin Theatre opens a six day run of War and Peace starring Audrey Hepburn Mel Ferrer and Henry Fonda in Vistavision Technicolor. The feature runs six days starting Thursday with one show nightly at 7 30 pm. A special Saturday matinee offers Abbott and Costello Meet Captain Kida for children with comic books to be given out. The film is classed as Adult by the Manitoba Board of Moving Picture Censors to guide parental choices.
