D.M.C.C. Elects Directors and Reports Arena Progress

The Dauphin Memorial and Community Centre annual meeting elected William McClernon to a two year rural seat and new directors for town representation, while re electing John Ringstrom. The group highlighted the new livestock and skating arena and ongoing use of the industrial hall as a busy year drew to a close.

Race For Play Off Spots Tightens In Big Six

Big Six Intermediate Hockey League tightens for third and fourth as five games remain. Standings show Brandon Ellis leads, Dauphin Kings strong, Neepawa and Souris in contention, Killarney four points back with two games left, Souris to play Killarney, possible three way tie if losses occur. Civil Defence Nursing Group to Begin Training Friday

Dauphin opens peace time Civil Defence Nursing Auxiliary training Friday evening at 8 p.m. in the local health unit auditorium with R W Payne St John council secretary as guest speaker. All local women may join to boost trained hospital care in crises and civil life. The free course offers qualification certificates on completion.

Barn Open At D.M.C.C Grounds For Eight Teams

Free accommodation for eight teams of horses is now available daily at the DMCC barn at Memorial Boulevard end. The DMCC board made the barn available for farmers on wintry days. Farmers should bring their own feed and DMCC disclaims responsibility for damage to persons or property.

Arena Attendance Rises in Dauphin With 13 Games

Official paid attendance at the new Dauphin arena this season reached 18 758. Saturday and Tuesday league games drew 1 183 and 1 333 paid admissions respectively. After 13 games the average attendance sits around 1 443.

Parallel Parking May Expand Across Dauphin Streets

Town council adopted in principle a planning committee report proposing parallel parking on all Dauphin streets. Debate followed over impacts on Main Street traffic and parking space. The by law will define limits, with further discussion on meters and signage.

The Dauphin town council was told that an increase in primary voltage and changes to the distribution system by the Manitoba Power Commission will occur soon. The current steam power plant would become useless as an emergency measure once these changes are implemented.

Dauphin Boy Honored For Rescue Effort At Concert

Norman Yerkins an 11 year old Dauphin resident received an honorary testimonial from the Royal Canadian Humane Association for heroic action and presence of mind in attempting to rescue Geraldine Geddes who drowned in the Vermillion River near the Second Avenue Northwest bridge on June 30 1951. The award was presented during a Donna Grescoe concert in the Dauphin theatre with Mayor W L Bullmore Inspector W H Nevin and Lions Club official R W Dicks taking part.

Reserve Seats For Play-Off Games In Dauphin Arena

The arena committee announced 1 573 reserve seats will be sold for Big Six play offs in the Dauphin arena with rush seats at 50 cents. Reserved seats go on sale at 10 a.m. the day before each game, and regular season holders get first option if they pick up by 4 p.m. on game day.

New Air Parcel Post Rates Take Effect February First

A new air parcel post rate schedule goes into effect February 1 announced by local postmaster J Newell. The plan increases weight limits to 25 pounds and sets size limits of 72 inches combined length and girth with no single dimension above 36 inches. Rates apply to Canada regions with per pound charges and minimums, plus a five cent per ounce excess weight fee.

Dauphin Agricultural Society Sets July 21 22 23 Fair

The 1952 Dauphin sum mer fair dates were fixed for July 21 22 and 23 at a directors meeting. The society will stay off the B circuit until moving to D MCC grounds and plans for mid way acts with Gayland Shows Calgary. A request was passed to raise prize money grants from 3000 to 4000 dollars.

Temperatures Rise After Cold Dauphin Week

A Dauphin area cold spell ended this week as temperatures climbed toward thawing. Tuesday reached 27.6 above zero with a likely top on Wednesday, while the week’s low dropped to minus 24.1. Last year’s period was similar but without a cold spell break. Precipitation was light with a tenth inch of snow Saturday and traces on three other days.
