Johnson and Pearson wrap a brief summit with emphasis on choosing a path away from confrontation as they sign an accord. Pearson then heads to Ottawa for further talks while Johnson returns to Washington for his four year inauguration and a pledge to combat poverty.
The Day family plan to leave at month end and take a month’s holiday before moving to a new charge. Rev Day and Mrs Day led Dauphin United Church expanding its congregation with two morning services and youth groups like Hi-Cs. He also served as supervising pastor for nearby churches and promoted United church initiatives.
The Dauphin Association for Retarded Children announces a building fund target of 21970 dollars for a school in Dauphin with land donated on Whitmore farm. Dr. Butler reports lack of facilities for retarded children and praises Kinsmen and Lions clubs for each donating 10000 dollars. The group operates nine students in current site with bus service covering 23 miles daily and notes strong attendance and community activities including Flowers of Hope envelopes and a festive Christmas program.
Miss Mary Hamilton of Ochre River was chosen president of the Dauphin Council of Women at the annual meeting held at the Boulevard hotel on Monday January 25 with 21 members in attendance.
The Royal Winnipeg Ballet appoints Arnold Spohr as director, making him the first Canadian to lead a major professional ballet company. Spohr, born in Saskatchewan and educated in Manitoba, becomes a national symbol in ballet and extends his influence into musicals and television.
February 1 marks the climax of Dauphin and area's March of Dimes drive aiding the Society for Crippled Children and Adults of Manitoba. Oddfellows lodge No 36 and Rebekah lodge No 13 volunteers will canvass homes. Local chair is Phil Leonard. secretary Mrs B Fulton. treasurer Mrs M Holbrook.
The past week brought a near thaw with a trace of rain on Thursday the 21st. Temperatures swung widely causing clothing confusion. A 57 degree spread occurred across three days, enough to make travel treacherous on both roads and footpaths.
The Dauphin Ochre region teachers push for a single pay scale across elementary and secondary schools in new proposal. They seek higher minimum and maximum salaries, adjusted increments, full placement of experience, and higher supervision allowances for principals and vice principals.
The plan outlines placement on a new schedule with full credit for prior certified teaching outside the district and for continuous Dauphin-Ochre service. It ensures no teacher loses pay during the transition and ties salary to qualifications and experience under existing regulations.
Tabulated salary schedules in effect under the arbitration agreement of September 1964 for the Dauphin-Ochre District association teachers and the Dauphin-Ochre Area school board outline pay scales and progression.
Elgin Maynard is re elected president of the Local Historical Society with Harley Armstrong as vice president and Mrs Ernest Fair as secretary and Mrs D D Grant as treasurer. A centennial project was discussed and a committee was named including Elgin Maynard Norman Chard Jim Ste Cecil Durston and Mrs E. Representatives in early school districts are writing histories and gathering photographs with help requested. Councillor Alf Buckwold attended and will report to the Town Council. The next meeting is Thursday Feb 18 at 2 pm in the civil defense room and all interested are invited.
Dauphin high school students will receive supplementary career counselling after a planning meeting last Wednesday. The program, created with Dauphin Collegiate and Technical Institute, the Dauphin Rotary Club, the Dauphin Ochre Area school board and the National Employment Service, will bring in volunteers from town to provide first hand job context. Grades 9, 11 and 12 will complete vocational interest questionnaires, then local workers will be invited to advise based on the analyses.
E W Hawkins QC, chair of Dauphin General Hospital board, outlined a five year plan to add a third storey to the new wing, study taking over lab and X ray, and possibly build a comprehensive medical building on hospital grounds. He urged trustees to lead with planning and strong public relations to gain citizen support and noted the 1957 prepaid hospital care initiative brought government in as a partner. The hospital association aims to improve communication among Manitoba hospitals and public health programs, with trustees and doctors expanding scope nationally.
The Dau board approves an 8 percent equity repayment on member shares. Cash repayments total about $23,000 with cheques issued this week. over $3,000 already paid this year. About 2,700 members have benefited. members have saved more than $500,000 since 1939 through cooperative ownership.
