Commonwealth Strategy Faces Atomic Age Shaped Future

Town Council Approves One Ton Truck Purchase

Town council decided to buy a one ton International truck for the engineering department from Dent brothers at 2313.45 dollars. The truck will include a hoist and is due for delivery in March or April. The engineering department currently operates three older trucks for public works and waterworks.

Opening of Dauphin Federal Building Draws Crowd

About 1000 citizens gathered Saturday for the official opening of the new Dauphin Federal building. Charles H. Snyder cut the ribbon as Royal Canadian Mounted Police,加Army cadets, Cubs, bands, and a hospital tea complemented the ceremony. Speakers included Mayor Bullmore, MLA Garson, MP Zaplitny, and postal officials. The facility houses the Post Office, RCMP, and several federal agencies with future expansion planned.

Michael N. Hryhorczuk M L A for Ethelbert is sworn as Manitoba attorney general in the cabinet reshuffle. The move follows Justice Ivan Schultz’s elevation to the Court of Appeal and William Morton’s ill health resignation from public works. Morton remains in cabinet without portfolio.

Non-Resident Fee Arrangements Withdrawn by Area Authorities

Area board rescinded resolutions from December 6 1954 and January 14 1955 that set a $30 per pupil fee for non resident elementary students attending other groups. The move followed Manitoba Public Schools act concerns and ongoing discussions on funding Eclipse and other school needs. A plan to build an Eclipse two room school and possible relocation of Eclipse building were discussed, along with joint meetings with the local town board to clarify expenditures. An electric clock was approved for installation in the board office.

Dauphin Public Library Reports Record Circulation in 1954

Mrs K Everall presented the librarian's annual summary to the Dauphin Public Library board. Total circulation rose to 27 579, up from 25 467 the year before. The 1954 book stock reached 8 264, with 5 991 adult and 2 273 junior loans. Nonresident borrowers remained active and Young Canada Book Week featured notable exhibits and school programs. Funding from the Dauphin Lions club provided Canadiana purchases enhancing the Canadian section.

Extensive drainage program approved for Northwestern Manitoba

The federal and Manitoba governments will fund a five year drainage and water storage program covering the Duck Riding and Porcupine mountains with annual contributions of 150 000 from each side totaling 1 500 000. Work starts summer 1955 and includes watershed projects impacting Riding Mountain water supply.

Record Low Temperatures Hit Dauphin District Midweek

A seasonal low of minus 36.5 degrees was recorded in the Dauphin district Wednesday morning. Week temperatures ran higher than the previous year with historic lows in 1954 noted for context. Snow totaled 1.6 inches over the week with small amounts on several days and trace snow on Sunday and Monday. Continuous readings include various dated max/min figures and scattered data entries.

Dauphin Bonspiel Ends With Mixed Winners In 57th Curling Meet

The Dauphin Men's bonspiel concluded with Ab Marlett of Swan River winning the Eaton and Ab Gowanlock of Dauphin taking the Dennison. Gowanlock earned grand aggregate honors after defeating Archie Rea’s locals in the final. Sixty-two entries contested the 57th event, down from last year.
