Plans near completion for a four day convention of the Manitoba command of the Great War Veterans' Association in Dauphin. Officials expect a three day conference of branch secretaries to begin with the opening day, with resolutions ready by March 1 on taxation relief and other acts.
John G. Gallagher former Alberta provincial policeman was sentenced to be hanged on April 16 1922 by Justice Simmons after a jury found him guilty on October 3 1921. He is linked to a prominent Carbon Alberta mine operator and was a former Dauphin resident and son in law of Mr All Maynard.
J. E. Hazelwood was arrested in Vancouver after being linked to earlier arrests in Edmonton for theft of a beaver coat at Gilbert Plains and a Grandview store break in. He escaped by jumping through a window but will be brought back to Dauphin for trial. Lionel G. Fraser faces trial at Spring Assizes.
Registrations of government thermometers at Dauphin cite daily max and min readings from January 17 to January 25. The notes show a pattern of above and below average temperatures with entries such as 4 above 19 below January 17 and 1 below January 18. Observer M. G. Widmeyer records the data.
John Wesley Cleaver son of William Cleaver of Dauphin died in Vancouver on January 15 at age 34. He served in the 45th Battalion and was captured by Germans during the war. He leaves four brothers William of Buffalo and Harry Wallace and Thomas of Vancouver. The funeral was military.
Harry Arnold, a large man with a strong swing, was walking in Winnipeg when a shadowy figure emerged from under a tree and demanded money. Arnold struck the assailant with a blow to the jaw, knocking him down before the attacker fled.
The regular meeting on Jan 18 named officers led by Patriarch J. J. Crowe. Chief Patriarch H. V. Smith with R. G. Thompson as Chief Patriarch further appoints High Priest R. Jas Watson mobilizes teams on the Vermilion River cutting 24 inch thick ice of splendid quality. He enlarges his ice house and targets 40000 tons for next summer. The Railway Co. contract is awarded to Jos Shand with 45000 tons output, shipping from the Valley River to Dauphin Kamsack Hudson's Bay Junction and other points.
At the last regular meeting of Alexandra Rebekah Lodge No. 13 held on the 21st, officers were installed. P.N.G. Mrs. L. Cox served as installing officer, with N.G. Miss C. Tuck and V.G. Mrs. O. H. Harvey among those installed.
The Stuart Widmeyer Chapter of the 1. C. C. E. announces a piano recital to be held in the Town Hall on Friday February 17th. The event features local musicians and aims to showcase student and community talent in a formal concert setting. Proceeds may support chapter activities and scholarships.

The Board of Trade held its annual meeting at the W.V.A. building with over fifty members in attendance. The retiring president A H F Steick chaired. Secretary-Treasurer E H Gurton presented the 1921 report, noting financial strain, membership at 47 in 1921, and a 1922 renewal at reduced dues. A long address on business success followed, with speeches on industry integrity intelligence initiative intensity and inspiration. Councillors elected include Benedickson Campbell Crowe Edgar Gardner Ramsay Ramsden Smith Spence White. The secretary treasurer reports 1921 income and expenses, a move to lower dues to 2.00 for 1922, and ongoing efforts on rail freight sheds industrial spur and other projects. gp A M Gammie visiting.
Chas Shewchock of Ethelbert appeared before PM Hawkins on a MT Act violation. The magistrate fined him 260 dollars and 3 dollars costs after witnesses Chief Everett and Constable Tower reported a midnight visit to Star Billiard com. Officers found four men in the entrance and a furnace room with a crock of home brew. evidence included exhibit A liquid and exhibit B furnace crack.
The Better Citizenship League of Dauphin met in the Methodist Lecture Room on Monday afternoon. The group passed a resolution urging the local member to raise with the Attorney General the lax enforcement of liquor laws and to push civic authorities to strengthen law enforcement.
St. Pauls church filled as Bishop of Keewatin Dr. Dewdney conducted confirmation for 26 candidates including nine boys and seven teen women. The bishop spoke before and after laying on of hands, urging Christian duty and hope. Hymns and a psalm anthem accompanied the service. Saturday Special Children s Felt Shoes 25 percent off.
The Neepawa Press notes the Progressive convention in Winnipeg denounces high telephone rates while also calling for expanding service east of Lake Dauphin, arguing the expansion would incur more costs without offsetting revenues. The piece approves the critique but urges moderation.
The senior hockey team left Thursday morning for Minnedosa to play one match and then return to Neepawa for a second game Friday night.
A concert and pie social will be held at the Mineral Creek school house in Ashville on Wednesday February Sth at 8 o clock. Admission is 25 cents with a pie purchase over 1.00 eligible for a refund of the admission price.
