Bonspiel Smashes Records With 94 Entries

The Dauphin bonspiel opened with 94 entries in the major open event, including 34 outside rinks 2 air force quartets and 38 local fours. A ceremony at the skating rink featured Mayor Isaac C Johnston declaring the bonspiel open and J J Crowe and Pete Robertson cutting a rock from its moorings. Ab Gowanlock and Kenny McLennan added ceremonial touches amid tough ice and late draws due to frost and roof drips. O.T. events advance as weather disrupts the schedule and the Burrows Memorial trophy prep continues.

Emergency Housing Regulations Turned Down in Dauphin

A special town council meeting on January 23 discussed Premier Stuart Garson’s letter seeking to apply federal Emergency Shelter regulations to war congestion areas. The council rejected the plan, believing existing and potential RCAF training needs would supply enough housing. Deserters Hunted Across M D 10 By Military Police

Manitoba and Ontario districts including M D 10 will be combed for army absentees. Names and addresses are in CMP hands as authorities press charges for harboring. Military police strength increases, investigators join, and civil Morse police unite to locate deserters. Public aid urged.

Deadline Set for 1945 Automobile Licences

The Herald reports the RCM police announce January 31 as the deadline to purchase the 1945 auto license plate and driver or chauffeur licences. Warnings began last Saturday and anyone without a 195 licence by January 31 faces prosecution. Car owners must remove old plates except the 1945 plate. The Highway Traffic Act allows both old and new plates to be displayed simultaneously.

Death of Victor Melvin Jackson Merchant

Victor Melvin Jackson 54 died suddenly Monday Jan 22 in his Dauphin store. Born in Ommemee Ontario he married Nina Thompson in Saskatoon in 1918. Survived by wife one son Raymond V. and three daughters plus three brothers and four sisters. Funeral Jan 27 United Church 2 30 pm interment Riverwide cemetery with Masonic Elks rites.

Dauphin Urgently Needs Blood Donors For Red Cross Drive

Dauphin blood donors are urged to pledge as the Red Cross Clinic collaborates with the Dauphin Rotary to boost supplies for wounded soldiers. The drive promotes film showings at Gay Theatre and pledge cards at local outlets with weekly donor rounds and more than 14 000 donations recorded in 13 weeks.

Radio Guest Jean Hinds Speaks To Local Council

Miss Jean Hinds of Winnipeg, CBC commentator, spoke at the Local Council of Women January meeting in the Collegiate auditorium. She described expanding roles for women in radio, urged listener responsibility, and outlined CBC programs for women while noting radio careers and after program discussions. She noted her CBC work from 1940 onward and current broadcasts on CBK.

Local Red Cross Women Report 1944 Efforts

The Women’s Work Committee of the Red Cross society reported a busy 1944 at their Jan 9 annual meeting. Seventy-five attendees heard that 17 shipments to Winnipeg included 2096 articles for armed forces hospitals and civilian relief overseas, with solid support from volunteers and local groups.

No.7 B and G Training Ends Feb 2 at Dauphin Station

No 7 Bombing and Gunnery school east of Dauphin will cease operations as a training unit of the B C A T P on Feb 2 with continued use of the station not definitively confirmed. The Herald notes a long history of efficiency from construction in 1940 to multiple ministerial efficiency pennants and a 1944 provincial championship for the No 7 basketball team.
