Harry Eccles notes rigorous austerity in Hungary before the October revolution with mass layoffs of government white collar workers. The disbanded Hungarian army largely sees its duties assumed by Russian occupation forces, signaling deep budget cuts and control shifts.
The Soviet Union and China say they remain ready to assist Middle Eastern states against external meddling. In a joint communiqué closing Chou En-Lai’s Moscow visit, Bulganin and Chou denounce imperialist aggression and vow unity with the USSR and Communist bloc in the cold war.
Washington reports say President Nasser decreed Egyptianizing key foreign businesses in Egypt. The move unsettles both local and foreign investors and is seen as a nationalization drive that could deter Western capital and financial aid.

RCMP found two bodies in a Western Bakeries panel delivery truck along a highway near Winnipegosis after a routine check at 7 30 p m Saturday. Peter Senchuk a bread delivery driver and Mrs Stadnyk were deceased from gunshot wounds. A .22 rifle lay nearby. Both victims were separated from spouses and left children in guardianship. Investigators note limited movement details.
Dauphin No. 905 trustees protest area board actions seen as attempting to change local board rights in selecting teachers. They defend the Emerson appointment to the town elementary staff, note proper procedure, and offer to publish applicant lists if challenged. The letter accuses the area board of bias toward rural teachers and questions motives behind the veto on Emerson’s contract.
Dauphin Ochre area board moved to askEducation to repeal two sections of the Public Schools Act authorizing district nominating teachers and area boards appointing teachers. Dauphin School District No. 905 protested, citing unsatisfactory appointments and seeking authority shift. The board also rejected hiring an elderly male teacher citing age and health issues, signaling a potential test case on who has appointment power.
The early week saw a mild up to 27 above on Jan 18. Temperatures fell to 22 below by Tuesday midnight and reached 30 below Wednesday morning. Snowfall remained light, less than an inch for the seven day period.

Mrs B C Goodhand is back as library board chairwoman with D E McLean as vice chair. Librarian is Mrs K Everall with staff including Ida Whaley and S C Lake. The year features a notable August rise after renovations and a visit by Miss Marjorie Morley to discuss regional library legislation.
DMCC chairman W Cruz urges town and rural residents to attend the 8 p.m. meeting at the DMCC industrial building to discuss financing for the rest of the construction program and upkeep. Elections will fill two rural and three town seats. terms and current directors listed.
Ron Robertson public works minister in Winnipeg denies rumors he will resign from the cabinet to run in Dauphin federal riding. He says no one has approached him and he has no interest in federal politics, preferring to remain in his current post.
Dauphin readies a town wide house canvass on the evening of Jan 31 to wrap up a strong March of Dimes drive. OOF Campaign Publicity chair J L Stewart notes at least 50 workers needed with Oddfellows and Rebekahs door to door 6 to 8 pm. Residents urged to light porch bulbs to aid the final windup.
Week overview shows six traffic convictions and four warnings. Six town by law infractions and six other infractions recorded. Two fires attended. One truck stolen from town and recovered outside town limits. One theft under investigation. All convictions under Liquor Control Act.
Fifteen Hungarian youths ages 16 to 24, two weeks in Canada, arrived by boat to Quebec and were greeted Monday evening at the CNR depot Dauphin. Local Hungarian committee led by Father Baczkowski and A D Sheckleford hosted a welcome at United Church Hall with coffee and supper. Mayors and civic leaders welcomed them and speakers urged speedy placement in homes and jobs to learn English.
Direct tri weekly CN passenger service between Winnipeg and Churchill began this week with departures from Winnipeg on Mondays Wednesdays and Fridays and arrivals in Churchill on Wednesdays Fridays and Sundays. In the opposite direction Churchill departures occur Sundays Tuesdays and Saturdays. The extension is enabled by an extra train between The Pas and Churchill.
Parks officials report 534 642 people visited Riding Mountain National Park from April 1 to Nov 30 1956, up slightly from 534 037 in the previous year. December saw 9 167 vehicles carrying 13 444 passengers, with milder weather and total snowfall at 30.7 inches through December.
