A series of landslides buried four people near Hope and caused seven deaths at Ocean Park 300 miles north of Vancouver. About 200 families evacuated as 14 slides snarled the southern trans provincial highway. Nearby Indonesia Malaysia crisis eases with calls for peaceful UN or Afro-Asian inquiry.
The Manitoba Centennial Corporation informed Dauphin council that a combined police office and fire hall does not qualify for centennial grant assistance. The town's tentative grant application also cited an indoor pool project and other possibilities. final decisions were deferred to the finance committee.
The DARC holds its annual meeting at the Boulevard Hotel this Thursday evening January 21 at 8 p.m. Guest speaker is John Christianson, educational director for Retarded Children's from Portage la Prairie. Open to all interested in DARC work.
Dauphin town council hears proposals from Local Union No. 857 for changes to the 1965 work and salary agreements. The public works committee recommended several actions including appointing Mayor A. C. Newton to a safety committee and considering bids and referrals on town property, airport rentals, and subdivision development.
Adam Nicholson was re elected as chairman of the Dauphin Public Library board at the January 18 annual meeting. The report shows 1964 circulation rose to 43 768 from 41 500 in 1963 with gains in junior and adult sections and registrations up to 5 395. The board added 1 167 new books and discarded 39.
A troop of First Dauphin Scouts travels four and a half miles from the highway to Grey Owl's cabin with food and bedding on toboggans. The group, led by Scout Master Glen Clarkson, unloads for a two day stay as leaders supervise. Names include Brian Woods Sam Barber Bruce Stokotelny Peter Kudiek Bill Humberstone Edward Fox Brian Clarke Ken Wainwright Wayne Mouck Jim Wainwright Dennis Clarke Cliff Coombs. Inside the cabin the crew cooks meals with large frying pans of hamburgers or beans during chow time.
The National Institute for the Blind honors Dauphin and district with a wall certificate for donations totaling 1090.58 raised during the late November canvass by the local Council of Women and affiliates.
The Dauphin-Ochre Area school board equipment committee will study the cost and equipment needs for a new automotive course at Dauphin Collegiate and Technical Institute. The report, requested at Monday’s meeting, aims to replace the current machinist shop course with a program aligned to local needs.
The Gay Theatre on Main Street South in Dauphin will reopen as the New Dauphin Theatre after extensive renovations. Lorne Lunan of Carrot River Sask leases the Gay Theatre and the Park Drive In from Harry Phillet of Service Theatres Edmonton. The opening is planned for early spring with work starting soon and plans for special Saturday shows for youths.
The Dauphin Theatre at 316 Main Street North, built in 1921 and gutted by fire in 1964, has been sold to F. W. Woolworth Company Canada Ltd for future expansion. Demolition is slated for February as part of Dauphin's Main Street redevelopment. Harry Phillet of Service Theatres announced the signing in Dauphin Tuesday afternoon.

A Christmas gathering at Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Bedford’s home united four generations all male. Great grandfather Harry Bedford holds great grandson Donald Brent Bedford while grandfather Gordon Bedford watches. Don Bedford and wife from Thompson visit with newborn son born Oct 2 to meet family.
Thomas B. Smart won the by election for area ward 4 on the Dauphin Ochre River school board with 147 votes against 55 for Robert D. Strang. Turnout was 202 voters about 20 percent of the ward electorate. Smart assumes duties at the next area board meeting.
Gordon Harrison starts his fifteenth year as fire chief with an executive group including Gordon Seeley, Don Porter, and others. G. Gilmour leads the rescue unit and C. Bell oversees equipment. many drivers were appointed. The department lists 1964 losses at 91 750 dollars, dominated by the Dauphin Theatre fire around 78 000, with 59 calls logged across rural, chimney, rubbish, vehicle, shop and home, space heater, road, and electrical incidents.
Mrs J E Dent was re elected for a second term as president of the Day Women s Hospital Auxiliary at the annual meeting in the hospital board room. The group reported guest speakers films hospital tours and entertaining other auxiliaries. Funds from memberships rummage tag days and the spring tea financed equipment purchases including six wheelchairs and one incubator in 1964.
