DMCC reports major improvements and 1955 projects

Fire chief Gordon F. Harrison told town council that the Dauphin Volunteer Fire department logged 29 calls in 1954 with total fire damage of 1260 dollars the lowest in ten years. Chimaney led with eleven calls and other incidents included garage fires overheated pipes rubbish and more.

Council Seeks Amendment on Unemployment Insurance
The town council asks the federal government to amend the unemployment insurance act so workers who do not reach 180 days of insurable employment can draw benefits pro rata to their contributions. Current law requires 180 days in two years for eligibility. The Jan 10 meeting also notes many laid off workers exhaust benefits too soon and seek municipal aid.

At the January 10 meeting the Dauphin council learned the provincial public works department will lend equipment in 1955 for seal coating 560,000 square feet of the airfield runway. H B Stanley said the gear would be available when not needed on trunk highways, with a tentative cost item to be submitted later.

Heavy Snow and Cold Break Season Records
A week saw 9.5 inches of snow the heaviest so far this season with five inches on Thursday and a sequence of lighter falls through Wednesday. Sunday reached a season low of minus 25.8 degrees while all daily highs remained above the coldest readings of last year, which also had more subzero minima and higher cold totals.
Regional Festival Of Allied Arts Is New Name Of Dauphin Project
Dauphin’s Regional Festival will be renamed the Dauphin Regional Festival of Allied Arts. William Schellenberg is named president. H E Derick becomes festival treasurer. Mrs. W K Marsh is coordinating secretary. 1955 festival runs April 25–30 with syllabus due soon. adjudicator announcements later this month. An annual meeting follows the festival with officer elections in November.

New Dauphin Secretary-Treasurer Eric Day Announced
Eric C. Day named secretary treasurer of the town of Dauphin. A 25 year veteran, he began in the engineer's office and moved to administration as accountant in 1952, later serving as assistant secretary treasurer before taking the post. Day, born 1920 in Glenella, served overseas in World War II with the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders and was a Dieppe prisoner. He is married to Eva Parker and they have four children.
