Dauphin Opens New Health and Welfare Centre Ceremony

Dauphin unveiled a new 100000 health and welfare centre in a formal ceremony led by Hon. Ivan Schultz with hundreds in attendance. Dauphin Volunteer Fire Brigade Elects Leaders

Jim Oliphant Jr was reelected chief at the brigade annual meeting. Dick Roust is assistant chief and Jim Benton second assistant. Gordon Harrison elected secretary treasurer with Ernie Bennett and Jack Brander to the executive. During 1948 the brigade responded to 36 fires with 323 600 in total damage and laid nearly 6000 feet of hose. Chief Oliphant praised the members and anticipated a new fire truck to boost efficiency.

School board approves caretaker bonus in town schools

At last Saturday’s meeting the area school board approved a $10 monthly caretaker bonus for town schools. The recommendation to raise pay was originally made by the local school board last fall.

Weather Box Forecast Foretells Prolonged Cold Spell

The weather box warned of persistent cold through mid February with average highs around 19.2 degrees in early January and a sharp dip to 7.6 degrees. The coldest night last winter reached 28.3 degrees on January 22.

Sneath Elected President of Dauphin Legion Branch

Lloyd G. Sneath was elected president of Dauphin branch No. 20 of the Canadian Legion for the current year, succeeding A. J. Middleditch who had held the post in 1947. The new executive includes L P Beech as first vice-president and W T Bowen as secretary-treasurer, with numerous committee chairmen named for finance memorial membership sports DMCC building and property lunch bar and other duties.

Dauphin 51st Curling Bonspiel Draws Record Rinks

The Dauphin List bonspiel opens with 124 rinks entered, 64 from outside points, a record far exceeding 94. Three sheets join seven in the DMCC building and six at the skating rink. Finals move to Friday and Saturday evenings with one ticket granting access both nights. Mayor Bullmore opened the event before a large crowd. officials hailed the record entry as the largest rural Manitoba curling event.
