The weatherman notes January 1961 has seen variable temperatures with notable extremes. Records include 37 degrees on Jan 5 surpassing 1949, and 41 to 43 degrees on Jan 15 16 not breaking highs, while lows reached 36 below on Jan 3 and 28 on Jan 2, with 27 in 1923. The outlook suggests modest fluctuation remains ahead.
The annual DMCC meeting will be held in the industrial hall board room on Monday January 23 at 830 pm. Annual reports will be heard and an election of officers will be held. All interested persons are invited to attend.
Councillor Nick Shwets is reappointed chairman for the third straight year at the Dauphin Athletic council meeting on Monday January. The 1961 roster adds Dr T KK Kolkind and Lou Hill as new members with committees led by Kolkind. Secretary treasurer Jack Petura and recreational director Clarence Riehl also noted. 1960 marked a record year for activity.
Major General Geoffrey Walsh, commander of Western Command, visits Dauphin on Tuesday January 10. He meets with unit officers of the 70th Field Battery RCA SP and inspects administration accommodation stores and equipment. Also present are Lieut Harvey Buckwold Brigadier John Panginan Lieut Col Webster Burton Major Les Wainwright and Squadron Leader J Kells.
A Dauphin unit meeting of the Canadian Cancer Society will be held in the Kings Hotel Banquet Room on Friday January 20. An election of officers for 1961 will take place and all interested persons are urged to attend.
Canada Council provides 700 for the Manitoba tour of the Canadian Players enabling 700 rural high school students to attend The Tempest matinee on February 1. Dauphin-Ochre area gets 23 seats via Lions Club sponsorship and 49 students from Sifton and Makinak receive transport and access. Additional allocations include Turtle River 16, Duck Mountain 13, and Intermountain 22 students.
Three Dauphin slide enthusiasts won prizes in Manitoba Horticultural Association province wide contest. J. E. Dent took second for fruit and vegetables with a pumpkin shot. Mrs H. W Chute won fourth for gladiolus cut flower arrangements. Mrs. B C C Goodhand earned fourth for trees and shrubs. This marked Dauphin’s first entry, with 18 slides submitted across six classes. The winning slides join a Manitoba library for regional societies.
Open house at Breslaw Compact apartments on Second Avenue NW Dauphin drew visitors on Friday January 13. Residents welcomed guests and described features such as bed or bed sitting rooms with ample light tile floors and modern baths.
Dr WG Martin, member and deputy speaker of Manitoba's Legislative Assembly, will address the Dauphin Chamber of Commerce annual dinner at the town hall on Wednesday evening February 1. His talk titled Japan Land of Enchantment covers Japanese life, industry, and postwar developments with color slides from 1957.
Manitoba Chambers of Commerce hosts regional conference for 20 C of C delegates from central and north western Manitoba. Seminars cover presidents and secretaries goals and ideas, and committee chairmen roles. Dauphin hosts second regional event, with sessions planned for local chamber leaders.
Dauphin Volunteer Fire Department members reelected Gordon Harrison as Fire Chief for the 12th year, with Dawson Sisson and George Scott as secretary treasurer and deputy chief. 1960 saw a record low $465 in property damage, 2500 feet of hose laid at 45 alarms, from chimneys to an oil blaze on 6th Avenue NW. Fire calls by category ranged from grass and rubbish to road oil. new rescue equipment was purchased and a fire poster contest succeeded in schools.
The Dauphin-Ochre Area school board studied and approved preliminary plans for an eight room addition to Whitmore school. Winnipeg architect Rov M. Lev to draft final plans for a 3200 square foot auditorium gymnasium seating 400. Extensions to the east of existing six rooms, with two of the new rooms designed for Grade 5 classes. Permanent stage chosen. construction targeted to start in spring, occupancy by September.
Town council instructed the town solicitor to draft a by law to rezone Main Street north from Fourth Avenue to River Avenue as residential except for lots 1 2 and 3 block 20 plan 243. Lots 12 and 3 are part of Safeway site. The change would convert facing property from Fourth to north. Commercial zone since August 13 1959. Planning committee first met January 9.
Monty Little ends a 44 year tenure with Western Grocers and its Dauphin origins after a 30 year run with the company. A December farewell included a luggage gift and a staff luncheon. Little, who came to Dauphin in 1912 from Kingstown Ireland, married Jean Thomas of England and has two daughters. Walter Misku succeeds him as Western Grocers foreman.
The Dauphin Herald publishes an RCMP release detailing Highway Traffic Act sections governing school buses. It explains required signals red flags lights and warning devices for buses stopped to load or unload children and motorists must stop at least fifteen feet away unless the bus resumes motion or signals to proceed.
Manitoba motor vehicle data indicate a drop in fatal and injury accidents for Jan 1 to Nov 30 1960 versus the same period in 1959. Hon B Carroll notes 110 deaths in 93 fatal crashes in 1960 compared with 135 deaths in 117 crashes in 1959, with total injuries down from 4 231 to 4 300 respectively and total province wide accidents easing from 11 574 to 11 260. Winnipeg proper saw 15 deaths in 1960 versus 24 in 1959, while Greater Winnipeg had 18 fatal crashes in 1960 and 31 in 1959.
The Dauphin Rotary Club reports gross proceeds from the Rotary Carol festival at United Church on December 13 and 14 totaling $19538. After expenses of $5990 borne by Rotarians, the entire net was donated to charity.
