Dominion Grants to Fairs Seen Unaffected by War

Western fairs will not be deterred by the war this year and may enjoy a banner season. The Dominion government grants will continue, and an increased effort in boys and girls club work at all fairs on the B circuit was noted. Dauphin fair dates are July 11.

Three Chimney Fires Hit City Morning Cold Snap

Sub zero Monday morning brought three chimney fires within an hour. The first alarm came from Fred May's on Seventh Avenue at 8 S. W. The second from J Witwicki's near the Fair grounds and the third from Auto Supply on Main and Second. Most damage occurred at May's after a second outbreak near 10 o'clock as the brigade was recalled.

Engineer Al Borlend Ends 39 Years on the Railroad

Engineer Alfred Borlend ends a four decade railway career after stopping Engine No. 1127 at the CN depot. He began as a Winnipeg platform recruit, became a fireman in 1903, then an engineer in 1905 and served across Port Arthur Edmonton Kamsack and Dauphin before joining CN. The Dauphin Brotherhood honor presented by Neil Wilkinson, with plans to move to the West Coast in spring.

Dauphin Intermediates Set To Face Yorkton Saturday

Dauphin Intermediates travel to meet Yorkton Saturday at 9 PM in Dauphin arena. Yorkton, described as a tough outfit, has recent practice and last year played well against Dauphin. Bob Fagen warns of possible Friday Jan 26 game with Yorkton Midgets and a Saturday clash with Clark Transportation from Winnipeg.

R S Greaves, an oldtimer from Dauphin now living in Limassol Cyprus, writes from the island to the Pioneers Association. He recalls the long association, praises Dauphin as a safe place despite world events, and mentions replying to an invitation to the annual reunion.

Lions Club Helps PoorChildren Get Glasses Through Ticket Draw

The Lions Club raises funds by selling tickets titled Dollar Dan with one fifth of proceeds marked for the fundraiser. When tickets sell out, Dollar Dan is drawn and the winner receives the prize. The remaining money buys glasses for children with deficient eyesight. Nurse E Brown directs children to Dr J J Arklie for eye exams and fittings. Eight children have received glasses so far, limited to those with needy parents.

Neepawa Withdraws From Intermediate Hockey League

The Brandon Neepawa Dauphin Intermediate league was arranged and a schedule set before Neepawa pulled out. Negotiations failed and the league was cancelled on Monday night. Dauphin arranged a game with Yorkton intermediates for Saturday night to fill the gap.
