Town Births and Deaths Trend in 1945 Dauphin Area

Ukrainian Veterans Honored at Banquet
A New Year’s Eve banquet at the Ukrainian People’s Home honored 20 returning veterans. Master of ceremonies A T Warnock and speaker Capt. Korasinich spoke on joining the Ukrainian Veterans Association and the Canadian Legion. Cpl Ted Karasinich shared overseas memories and aid to refugees. Local veterans gave brief talks, followed by singing and a midnight frolic.

The Rev L A Muttitt conducted funeral services for Garth Fraser Johnston at the Dauphin United church. He died at his home in Dauphin on Saturday Jan 12 after a prolonged illness and was 56. Interment was in Riverside cemetery with pallbearers E McNabb A Chute J E Ball D Justice S Lowes and H E Derick. Born in Hensel North Dakota he served in the Royal Canadian Dragoons and Canadian Scottish regiment and was wounded at Hill 70 in France. He married May Cruise in Winnipeg in 1919 and later homesteaded in Prairie River Saskatchewan before operating a store in Dauphin.

Hershell Smith Awarded DSO At Winnipeg Investiture
Lt Col Hershell A. Smith of Dauphin received the Distinguished Service Order at a Saturday investiture in Winnipeg attended by Gen H D G Crerar. The ceremony honored 32 Canadian Army MD 10 members. Smith earned the DSO for leadership in an Abbeville attack in September 1944. He also holds the Military Cross.
