The Town Hall hosted a Thursday evening social by the Next of Kin Society under Mr. A. E. Munson. Dancing began at nine with Mc Murray's orchestra, and cards and a late lunch followed a well attended event that supported soldiers welfare.
President J A Maclean of the University of Manitoba will speak at 8 p m Tuesday in the Assembly hall Mackenzie school on The University of Manitoba. He will outline the university purpose and work and its claim on provincial support. Mayor J L Bowman will chair. admission is free and all are invited.
A new two room school will hire Miss Rowe as teacher for the current term with plans for a second instructor once the building is complete. The G.G. branch held a social meeting at the schoolhouse, praising the Grain Growers and electing officers for 1918. Local residents, including Messrs D. Henry, F. Randall, and Mr. Cameron, appear in various town notes, with attendance noting illness and a fatal gas incident in Neepawa.
The Quality Store shows chiffon taffeta silks and crepe de chine in window displays this week. A full line of ladies and children’s underwear and hosiery is offered along with all wool dress goods in plain and fancy weaves. The shop invites customers to view the goods. Specialty merchandise noted.
Sergeant Sam Shaw, once an orderly in a hospital, stunned observers by playing a blindfolded billiards match at the National Maritime Club in Regent's Park. He scored 62 points in 1 hour 40 minutes against a sighted opponent, with no more than a few ball contacts, claiming he senses balls by touch and coldness. Proceeds totaled $140 for hospital funds.
The W H A annual meeting at the town hall reports declining receipts and a hope to stabilize funds by monthly contributions. Secretary Mrs Pearcy notes ten regular and five special meetings with average attendance near one. Fundraising included four hops, tea sales, and home cooking events backed by ward furniture and operating room accessories.
The treasurer Mrs M Wick submitted the report showing receipts of 1317 25 as part of the treasurer's records. Officials listed include Hon President Mrs F B Race, President Mrs E B Walker, 1st Vice Mrs G H Palmer, 2nd Siena Mrs Rogere, J B McIntyre treasurer Mrs M Wiss, etc. The report notes committees led by Mrs Wallwin, Mrs McIntyre, and others. Mr J McLennan, director of United Growers association, attended. Monten organization planning a local board company with future actions outlined.
The January edition aims for wide distribution to reach more students and ex-students. The Girls' Athletic Association met Tuesday to select captains for hockey and plan winter games. Grade XI XII captain Miss Wilm ar t. Grade X captain Miss Ruby Johnston. Grade IX captain Miss Florence Osborne. A permanent team drawn from all four grades will form soon. new Grade IX students N Mandauick and D Demezuk noted. The Literary Society plans a benefit night at a local theatre to fund the Collegiate Honor Roll. New physical drill wands purchased for the girls. Basketball remains popular with two weekly drill periods and interclass games. Miss Tannice Hamilton joined Grade XI.
The S.A.S. schedules a ten cent tea and home cooking sale at T. Scotts Saturday the 19th. A February 14 masquerade dance at the town hall features patriotic and comic costume prizes. Donations include a centre piece from Mrs Farrell and a tatted handbag from Mrs Graham. Parcels to the trenches include forty pairs of hand knit socks. Donations from Mike Koshowski and Mike Luke are noted.
Joseph A. Ross and Mrs. M. J. Shaw wed at the Methodist parsonage with Rev. R. E. Spence officiating. The couple plan a brief honeymoon in Winnipeg before settling near Gilbert Plains. A second ceremony united Geo. Alexander Fulkerson and Bessie Elizabeth Kerr at the Presbyterian manse with Rev. S. A. Martin. They will reside in the Burrows district. Presbyterial for the northern Manitoba district will convene at St James Church on February 27 and 28.
The Doughty Curlers report district primaries and Dominion competition in town on Thursday January 6. Dauphin clubs led by F Buie A Watson and Joseph Barker won both events. Sixteen rinks compete in club play as officers push to fill sheets for big season events. Dauphin bonspiel moved to February 4 with possible draws on February 5 if weather allows.
The annual meeting of St Pauls church on the 1dth lnst elected delegates to synod E Pilgrim J Whitmore and Dr Walker with alternates M Wick M Cardiff and M G Hurd. Vestrymen include Judge Bonnycastle M Wick E Pilgrim Dr Walker J Whitmore A F Farrell G Leach T Walker R W James E O Turland T Bridle C H Reeves. Mr B serves ninth year as Rector’s Warden and A M Gamimie J N McFadden were auditors.
At a meeting on the 9th instant the seventh and eighth grade girls formed an auxiliary to the Red Cross society. Officers elected include Hon. President Mrs. Frost, President Alma Paul, Vice Celia Buckwold, Secretary Sadie Iaacovitch.
