W G White outlines changes in retailing from chains to department stores and the importance of personal store contact. He cites cost reductions in hats and inventory downsizing, noting benefits to retailers and customers, and contrasts modern wholesale aims with older practices.
Funeral services for William T. Neill were held at St. Pauls Church with Rev. H E Bridgett officiating. Interment at Riverside. Neill resided in Manitoba twenty seven years and left a widow and four children Laurence Doris Edna and Joseph. He was survived by father Jas Neill five sisters and four brothers. Community sympathy urged in a note on better business practices and morality in merchandising.
The funeral for Milton George Shields eldest son of Mr and Mrs Fred Shields occurred Thursday at 2 30 from the United church in Dauphin after he died Monday in Dauphin General Hospital. Relatives include parents two sisters Mrs Wilfred Cardiff and Mrs James Pearson and brothers Lorne William and Wallace Shields. Pallbearers were William Davies Lloyd Agnar Ronald Paul Allan Durston William Angus and William Cardiff.
W. J. Ward spoke on The Plight of the Farmer at a Tuesday Institute. He argued that farm product prices have fallen far more than Canadian consumer prices and that tariffs add to consumer costs, averaging four hundred million dollars yearly. He urged a bonus system to boost purchasing power for farmers, noting Australia’s use of this method with noted success.
At a Dauphin agricultural society meeting Dr. C McGuirk and J E Ramsden were named delegates to the Western Canada Fairs association annual meeting in Winnipeg on the 20th to 22nd. The committee slate was presented for the year. a rodeo return was urged and a review for free acts at the grandstand was proposed. Mayor D D McDonald said winter fair plans were nearly complete and organization underway.
Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers star in Top Hat at the Dauphin Theatre with shows Thursday Friday and Saturday this week. The pairing delivers song and dance as cinemas classic romance lights up the stage.
At the January 1936 meeting the Dauphin School Board nominated and installed W. G. White H. W. R. Gemmel and Geo Jackson to fill three vacancies from November elections J N McFadden was chosen chairman for the year and praised past work The board named committees on management finance building and grounds supply van fuel and auditorium plus reports noted school repairs thermostat work and fuel delivery totals with old fuel stock remaining at year end.
An adjourned town council meeting on January 9 with Mayor McDonald and six councillors. Correspondence listed includes pensions, town hall demand denied, cemetery grant referred, water rates denied, and insulin supply discussed. Solomon Ramsden motioned to accept Harrison Roezell's purchase of Lot 8, Block 7, Plan 399 for 25 dollars, carried. Continued on Page Two.
Principal Churchill spoke to the Canadian Club of Dauphin at the King's Hotel with H N Macneill chairing. A banquet preceded the meeting attended by about forty. new officers were elected and monthly meetings planned to boost Canadian knowledge and civic responsibility. Churchill’s topic Canada and Foreign Affairs was described as lucid and engaging.
The Herald previews Mr. Churchill's forthcoming address, noting it contains substantial material. If not in this issue, readers can expect it in the next edition.
Members of the Dauphin Commercial Travellers association hosted a farewell at the Hamilton Hotel for Les Hughes of Wrewry's Ltd as he transfers from Dauphin to Brandon. George Dowler chaired the gathering and W. J. McConnell lauded Hughes as a devoted, hardworking member.
The president outlines Board of Trade activities focusing on agriculture and dairying. Honored guests Alex Paul and John G. Shand are credited for regional achievements in wheat and butter. Major H. G. L. Strange is invited as speaker. All weather highway to Clear Lake completed, boosting Dauphin as a distributing center. An official opening is planned to promote regional business before next summer holidays.
