Committee Autos Unchanged Board Reelects Szewczyk as Chair

M F Szewczyk is reelected chairman and S S Hunt reelected vice chair as the large area board keeps the same committees for 1344. The board reviews an agricultural course timetable, funds for farm shop equipment, a $50 000 borrowing by law, and bus use for hockey transport. Delegates are named to the Winnipeg trustees convention with an alternate secretary-treasurer.

Bullmore Heads 50th Anniversary Jubilee Committee

The committee will arrange a celebration of the 50th anniversary of Dauphin being chartered as a village in 1898. Plans note a July charter date and tie in with the annual agricultural fair. Delegates from rural counties named. other organizations expected to appoint delegates.

D.M.C.C Council Plans Closed Meeting On Expropriation

Following a closed session with the town solicitor the council seeks a joint meeting with the Dauphin Memorial and Community Centre directors to discuss land expropriation for the D.M.C.C. site. The resolution specifies the gathering as a committee of the whole meeting.

A Calgary resident offered his parking meters to the town after hearing it wanted them installed. The council did not buy them and filed the letter in the archives.

Health Unit Reports 1947 Dauphin Statistics Show Shifts

Annual figures for Dauphin town and surrounding municipalities show 48 deaths 36 marriages and 147 births in 1947. Marriages dropped 33 from 1946 while births rose to 354 total with 312 in hospitals or at home. Sixteen infants died under one year and heart trouble led deaths.

Dauphin Police Report Shows Crime Decline in 1947

The 1947 annual police report for the town detachment RCMP notes fewer investigations and prosecutions than 1946, with 340 investigations vs 370, prosecutions down to 202 from 221, and court convictions at 184 from 198. Shoplifting included six cases with four adults convicted and two juveniles restitution.

Milk supply short for Dauphin still ships in

Dr. O McGuirk reported 22 dairy herds supply milk to Dauphin but remain insufficient. Milk is shipped from Ste Rose, with portions not TB tested though precautions ensure most comes from tested herds. A by law requires all supplying herds to be TB tested.

Area residents note a sharp drop in temperatures after weeks of milder springlike conditions. The cold grip persists as thermometers fall to new lows and refuse to rise.

W. T. Volkers was elected chairman of the local school board at the first meeting of the year held Wednesday evening at Mackenzie school. W. K. Marsh was named to fill the vacancy from the last municipal election, and the ten member board named committees for the year with chairmen listed as follows.

Province seeks 5000 grant for road paving project

The council asked for a $5,000 provincial grant to help pave streets leading to No. 5 and No. 10 highways after a reminder from district engineer H. W. R. Gemmell. Last year a similar grant funded Main street paving costing over $55,000.

Local School Board Seeks To Cut Trustees

The local school board discussed reducing trustees from ten to five as the area board takes on more duties under the large area plan. A committee will meet the area board to determine steps to shrink the local board. Also, A. E. Marcroft was named delegate to the trustees convention in Winnipeg and C. McTavish hired as caretaker at Henderson School.

Coyotes Shot During Past Year in Rural District

The rural municipal office records show 132 coyotes 1 timber wolf 3 bears and 3 cubs turned in over the last year. Bounties total 697 dollars half from the municipality and half from the province. George Travis led Dauphin area with 21 coyotes. Steve Negrych was runner-up with 12 coyotes one timber wolf and a bear.

Dauphin Curling Bonspiel Opens With Forty Rinks

Dauphin’s 90th annual bonspiel began with $1 rinks and forty outside entries in the Eaton grand challenge and Stelck’s primary events. Local officials officiated at the opening as visiting skips from across Manitoba and beyond joined in a week of matches plus two seven-enders highlighted so far.

Engineer Sees Dam Worsening Floods Near Vermilion River

Town engineer E. G. Waller told council that a dam beside the bridge on Second Avenue by the Vermilion river near the tourist camp is holding back water for the power plant and may be causing spring floods. Lowering it two feet could reduce flooding. committee to decide. A separate complaint claimed rot in unused fire coats from a local firm.
