Puchalski Committed For Trial On Manslaughter Charge

Arnold E. Puchalski of Gilbert Plains was committed for trial at spring assizes on a manslaughter charge linked to the death of 13 year old Mariene Burdeniuk after a car fire following a collision. A preliminary hearing before Magistrate Timomas Little heard evidence naming William Burdeniuk and others in the vehicles.

Five Candidates Named For tce Carnival Queen

Five candidates compete for the Dauphin Commercial Travellers 1950 ice carnival queen on February 25 in Dauphin. From Fork River Ivy Beyko Crystal Bilous Cocinne Hamelin Alice Kautner and Frankie Lozinski Tekets vie for honors. Tickets admit two adults or one adult and a child. The Ire Club of Greater Winnipeg presents the show with two performances. The queen will be crowned at both matinee and evening shows.

71 New Dwellings Set Dauphin Construction Record in 1949

Dauphin issued permits for 71 new dwellings in 1949, totaling 341,152 of the year’s 542,762 building value. The year also saw seven new commercial buildings and 28 dwelling alterations, boosting all permits to 137 at a total value of 542,762, far above 1948’s 333,110.

Council to Attend Public Meeting on Budget Discussion

Pauphin chamber of commerce proposes a public meeting for ratepayers to discuss the 19 budget with the town council. S. E. McLean urges a date between February 20 and 22 when the budget is being prepared. The chamber also says the area school board will participate, and the chamber will set the exact date.

Weeklong Cold Snap Records Subzero Readings and Light Snow

The week delivered persistent subzero temperatures with a -2 to -5 range and a -7.7 weekly average. A low of 36.2 below zero occurred Saturday marking the season’s coldest point, while snowfall totaled under three inches and a trace occurred Tuesday. Comparisons to 1949 show much milder highs of 43.8 and lows of -27, noting that this week overall stayed above zero.

Durston Re-Elected Chairman of Area School Board in Dauphin

Cecil R. Durston was re-elected chairman of the area school board. W. G. Ritchie joined as a two year board member for Dauphin. The board protested funding gaps for optional technical courses and discussed staffing, grants, and flexible course plans. Regular meetings shifted to the first and third Mondays with winter afternoons sessions and February 6 next meeting.

Parking Meter Survey Initiated by Dauphin Chamber

The Dauphin chamber of commerce starts a survey of local business men on parking meters or alternatives for main street parking. A questionnaire asks support for meters and limited parking with sample options like one hour between 9 am and 6 pm and invites other suggestions. Results will be shared with the town council and public.

New Train Schedule Curtailed by CNR Across Routes

Canadian National Railways announced a temporary schedule curtailment with Dauphin service cut to three nights a week and trains 63 and 64 discontinued. Calgary to Winnipeg No. 10 arrives Dauphin 2 a.m. Wednesdays Fridays Sundays while No. 9 to Calgary arrives 3 45 a m Tuesdays Thursdays Saturdays. Train No. 15 from Winnipeg to Swan River via Flin Flon arrives Dauphin 5 30 p m Mondays Wednesdays and Fridays. Train No. 16 returns to Winnipeg arriving in Dauphin 8 05 a m Tuesdays Thursdays Saturdays. The coal shortage prompted the curtailment.

Floor Prices Coming For Farm Produce

W. J. Ward MP returned to Dauphin this week and urged floor prices for livestock and poultry. He said Ottawa is discussing floors and listed likely rates butterfat 25? per lb eggs 40 cents per dozen pork 35 cents per lb and cheese 30 cents per lb with the prospect of nearby establishment.

Town Offers Plan to Move Dauphin Agricultural Grounds

Dauphin town council proposes to help the Dauphin Agricultural Society relocate the grounds to the DMCC site. The plan ties incorporation of the present grounds into the town limits to a ten year levy funded by the town, with matching federal and provincial grants for construction and a ten year budget. The rural municipality will decide on the proposal at a special meeting, as part of a broader effort to secure government funding.
