Council noted insufficient public demand and heavier assessment work as forms must be rewritten. An assessor was to be appointed and ornamental street lights were approved with half the cost paid by businesses. The fire escape by-law will have T R Cockl inspect public buildings and notify owners of needed repairs.

Preparations For Summer Fair Started
Dauphin Agricultural Society directors met to plan the 1940 fair with committees and delegates to the Western Canada Fairs convention in Winnipeg January 15 to 17. President W. D. Strang announced expected government grants and discussed hiring grandstand acts and harness races with a cap of 2500. Possible tie up with Manitoba Great West racing circuit would revive horse racing at the fair.

Training School for Rural Youth Opens With 63 Enrolled
The program begins with 63 pupils and three more boys seeking entry to bring total to 66. Classes meet at Whitmore school auditorium and run until March 15. Home making led by Miss Maxine Black with Miss Ivy Biglow as sewing chief. agriculture with W. E. Ring. Officials welcomed by Mayor Ramsden and others. Total enrolment last year was 71. this year registration is satisfactory.

Citizens are reminded that Thursday afternoon January 11 all stores in Dauphin will be closed for the first Thursday half holiday of the year. Post office staff will also observe the half holidays and wickets will close at 1 o'clock.
