Council Protests Cordwood Quality From Moonstain

The Gre council meeting, led by Mayor Meivonal, objected to the wood quality from the moonstain and cited many cords unfit for use. Officials discussed rest room funding for 1944, road upkeep, and better cloakroom and dust control, with actions planned on fencework and wood yard safety.

Snow Fencing Proposed by Board of Trade

Minutes of a January 3 1934 directors meeting note support for snow fences and snow plows to keep main highways open all winter. Indicate co operation among the three prairie provinces and a policy favoring larger centers with equivalent rates. The meeting also approves a January 17 1934 supper meeting and nominates a nucleus committee for arrangements.

Birth of Son for Mr and Mrs Lloyd Maynes

A son named William Charlies Ernest was born to Mr and Mrs Lloyd Maynes formerly Miss Rose West on Sunday January 7 1934. The city advertises a human interest note about the play Black Beauty showing at the Dauphin Theatre on Wednesday highlighting the community’s cultural life.

Mrs J R Hogg Dies At Gretna Age 75

Mrs J R Hogg widow of James R Hogg died Monday January 8 at her daughter Mrs D Kells home. Born October 10 1855 in Scottiethorpe England she came to Canada in 1905 living in Winnipeg then Gretna Manitoba since 1917. Survived by sons Robert and James of Winnipeg daughter Mrs D Kells of Gretna four sisters Mrs Bigley Mrs Farnsworth Mrs John Ross Mrs John Jackson and brother George Fardell of Rossburn. Funeral January 11 at United Church Gretna with interment in family plot.

Women’s Rest Room Report for 1933 Dauphin

The joint committee of the Town and Rural Municipality of Dauphin presents its 1933 annual report for the Women’s Rest Room. They sought $550 from each council. Rural gave $76.00, Town offered $45 and a promise of a free rest room in the Town Hall when ready, opened in March by Mayor Bennett. The new rest room provides space for a provincial health nurse and for meetings. The board spent $556.12 on maintenance during the year.

Rumors of giant prehistoric bones near the Valley River in the Dauphin district resurface. Geologist Henry Hind cites Ta wa pit accounts of mammoth remains described by an old Siouan guide, suggesting a buried carcass beneath ancient gravel ridges along Lake Dauphin’s shoreline long ago.

Three Dauphin Children Perish in House Fire

A fatal Dauphin blaze killed Walter four months Thomas nineteen months and Doreen three years while their mother was away for five minutes to fetch water. She returned to find the house a burning ruin and the children trapped inside. Neighbor Nick Kowalchuk alerted authorities and tried to help as the flames rose.

Birth in Dauphin General Hospital Gilbert Plains

Mr and Mrs John Mymko of Gilbert Plains welcomed a son on January 1? 1934. A Dauphin fire tragedy claimed three Hill children in a house blaze on January 6 in Dauphin Manitoba. Fire brigade failed to save lives and a coroner led an inquest resulting in a verdict of accidental death by unknown cause.
