Town Council Debates Rest Room Funds And Four Installment Taxes

The first regular Town Council meeting discusses continuing the Rest Room despite Rural Council withdrawal of support. A plan to collect taxes in four installments is proposed to promote thrift. The council agrees to cover half the Rest Room budget if rural funds follow through. A joint Finance Committee meeting with the School Board leads to monthly financial statements and a four installment tax plan. Gravel spur lease is canceled. tenders for 1500 cubic yards of gravel are invited. A $35,000 line of credit is approved and Manitoba Farm Loan bonds are to be purchased with 1925 due date.

Woman's Hospital Aid Society Holds Annual Meeting

The Woman's Hospital Aid Society met in Town Hall on January 3 amid cold, small attendance. Members reported $1,736.42 raised in 1923 toward a new Maternity Home and a $1,500 hospital building fund goal. Treasurer B. E. Wick listed receipts and expenditures. officers were elected including Mrs. McKinstry as President and Mrs. Wick as Treasurer.

Gilbert Plains rink wins Cruise Shield after Dauphin challenge

After a year with the Dauphin Curling Club two Gilbert Plains rinks skipped by P Robertson and J A Shepard secured the Cruise Shield on Monday night. Dauphin’s B Steen and Joe Barker played for the visitors who led early but dominated the later ends. Final scores show Shepard 19 Steen 9 Robertson 13 Barker 11-10.

Tariff Commission to Visit Dauphin to Hear Farmers

The United States Tariff Commission will visit Dauphin on Friday and Saturday the 11th and 12th. Commissioners O A Jure of Washington DC and F D Wilkinson of Fargo NC seek local farmers statistics on grain production costs in the west. The Washington Farmers’ bloc aims to raise wheat duty from 35 cents a bushel. Farmers should speak to the commissioners to support lowering the tariff due to comparable production costs in both countries.

Rev Thomas Neville To Remain Fourth Year At Church

At a large board meeting the Methodist church unanimously invited Rev. Thomas Neville to stay as pastor for a fourth year. The congregation is financially healthy and optimistic for the future. Neville also serves as President of the Children's Aid Society and the Children's Home and chaperones local curlers as chaplain.

Tie Camp Operating in Riding Mountain Forest Reserve

The tie camp at Norrgate in the Riding Mountain forest reserve uses contractors Morrow and Perrin. About 120 men work there carving 80 000 to 100 000 ties. Forty teams will haul out ties and about $40 000 will be disbursed to local people.

After two months of warm weather the New Year began with a extreme cold spell. Government thermometer readings from December 24 to January 7 show the river and city plummeting to 31 below zero on January 4.

3 Jumps Ahead at Dauphin Theatre Next Week

Tom Mix stars in 3 Jumps Ahead coming to the Dauphin Theatre on Monday and Tuesday January 14 15. Local Council of Women held its annual meeting at the Rest Room with broad cross section of affiliated societies. Officers elected included President Mrs Bready and several vice presidents and secretaries. A plan to defer reports until February was set and Mrs Speechley addressed the group on Red Cross work.
