John E. Ramsden was chosen to fill the municipal council vacancy in Dauphin on a Tuesday morning in January 1936. He took the oath of office with Mayor McDonald and several councillors. The council named standing committees for Finance, Public Works, Fire Water and Light, and Health Police and Relief, with chairmen and vice chairs designated. By-law to borrow 40 000 dollars from the Bank of Nova Scotia was approved. The meeting adjourned to January 9 with leave of absence for Councillor Watson.

Donald Irvine McDougall a prominent Manitoba high jump champion and member of the Winnipeg North End Athletic Club died Friday at Misericordia hospital after a two week illness from a ruptured appendix. Born May 26 1915 in Winnipeg he won Manitoba high jump titles in 1933 34 and 35. Survived by his parents and sister Eileen funeral held Monday at A B Gardiner funeral home with burial at Elmwood cemetery.

Aged Woman of Fork River Burned to Death in New Year’s Accident
Mrs. Thomas B. Venables, 74, of Fork River, died from burns and shock after a coal oil lamp toppled during a New Year’s party. Her husband carried her outside as flames consumed her clothing but extinguishing them failed. Surviving: husband, daughter Mrs. D. T. Dobson of Flin Flon, adopted daughter Phyllis at home, and a son in Glasgow. Funeral set January 2.
