Town decides to set up a wood cutting camp in Riding Mountain to provide work for unemployed residents. A letter from Hon Chas Stivewart notes that the federal dues will be released to the town, with 154 cords of wood allocated for the project. The camp is expected to be ready at the start of next week.
The Rose Ball attracted a large town attendance on New Year Eve at the town hall under Liew Stuart Widmeyer Chapter iopEe. Hostesses included Mrs H G Adgar Mrs M W Gordon and Mrs Lys with Ms H E Lys guiding a new modernistic decor scheme featuring spheres triangles cubes cylinders and illuminated rays. Mrs Widmeyer was absent due to illness while Mrs Peeties seven piece orchestra provided music and a dainty supper was served under Mrs BC Cochhand. A children's matinee is planned January 16 at 4 15 p m at the Dauphin Theatre.
The club championship draws 23 rinks starting December 28 and running through winter. The Indies enter 10 rinks in the Revival Competition with afternoon games. Preparations begin for the Boospiel starting January 71st, the major event in curling circles with Dauphin sinks participants and a mix of open and closed events.
The Hospital Board and Nursing Staff express thanks for Christmas gifts donated by the Women's Hospital Auxiliary Greek Catholic Women's Society Dauphin Meat Market Dauphin Florists and numerous individuals including A F Farthi Whitmore Padley Dauphin Medical Clinic Dr Postosk Dr Bottomley Bruce Goodhand Wilfred Robson Wallace Brown Abraham Groff and Charlie Denby of Winnipesgesis.
Ellis Ledse of Dauphin organized a Sunday evening concert at the Dauphin Theatre to aid the Elks Christmas Cheer Fund. Robert Hawkins chaired, detailing Elks efforts to relieve suffering. the event netted 66 dollars for the fund.
On January 7 the Rural Municipal Council of Dauphin organized for the year 1930 with Reeve W J Wickes presiding. New oath of office taken. committees named for finance, public works, drains, health, buildings, and more. appointments include ward road commissioners and constables for 1930.
The Pentecostal Church hosted the wedding of Eliza Annie Thomas daughter of Mr and Mrs William Thomas and William Lloyd son of the late Mr and Mrs Fair of Victoria BC The bride entered with her father to Lohengrin march and the register was sung for by Mrs F V Nicholson and Mrs H C Nicholson They served a buffet lunch at the bride’s parents home The couple received many gifts and will reside in Victoria BC with best wishes from friends.
Miss Laura Robson starts her Queen and Court campaign for The Pas Carnival and Dog Derby. Florence Sneddon acts as her local agent. A 25e ticket buys 25 votes and a guess on the Dog Derby finish time with a $200 prize for the closest estimate. The journey from The Pas to Flin Flon and back is planned in about 37 hours, as done in 1929.
A Dauphin mother Alice Lachka of Bield was charged by Magistrate Hawsins with operating a still for home brew. She was convicted on a previous liquor case and jailed for a year, with five children in care pending welfare measures. The case highlights gaps in welfare and parole oversight for a mother of many children.
Canadian National Railways reports the sheep instruction train will arrive at Dauphin at 230 p.m. on Saturday January 25. The notice notes the event occurs in Dauphin with a Friday or Saturday timing.
The Manitoba Legislature will meet on Tuesday January 21. Mrs Margaret J Lash died December 21 in Milton Ontario. The United Church annual meeting is moved to January 14 due to the Board of Trade event. Miss Lil Dickson married Oliver Josephson in Winnipeg and will live there. Dr M Laughry spoke to Rotarians on cattle work in Manitoba interlake. Fred Little received a short wave program from AG C Nauen in Germany. Screenings and dates for Skin Deep show at the Dauphin Theatre begin January 11. Winter Fair planning meets in Dauphin with March dates set for judging, grain and livestock events and prize talks. Funeral for Miss Ellen Outhwaite held January 6 in Dauphin with burial Riverside.
At Dauphin General Hospital several births are announced. Eugenia June Leda to Mr and Mrs Geo Campbell of Valley River on December 25. Leah Joyce to Mr and Mrs Ellis Geo Astley of Dauphin on December 29. Shirley Maxine to Mr and Mrs Stanley Metz of Gilbert Plains on January 1, 1939. A daughter to Mr and Mrs Benjamin Oakden of Winnipegossa on January 5, 1930. Freokiio Terry to Mr and Mrs Clifford E Stelck of Dauphin on January 7.
The Dauphin town council held its first 1930 meeting to swear in新 councillors and form committees. Mayor Robson welcomed new member Solomon and outlined aims for lower taxes, street and lighting improvements, fire and water services, and relief management as well as press cooperation. Committees across Finance Public Works Fire Water and Light Police Health License and Relief Property Reception Cemetery Hospital Board Fair Board were named, with adjournment set to meet a train on Thursday evening.
The St Andrew's Society held a New Year Eve dance at Elks Hall with about a hundred members and guests. Francis Walker arrived as the year began, Mc Murray's Orchestra played, and Rev. Gardiner led singing and a home waltz. Piper W Heard performed on the pipes. guests praised the music and anticipate the January 25 event Robbie Tips, to be announced in the Dauphin Herald.
W G White named chairman of Dauphin District School Board No 99 for 1930 at January 2 organizational meeting. Littie sworn in as Ward 2 trustee. Geo Buchanton Jr appointed to Ward 5 seat. Committees formed for management finance building and grounds fuel and heating supply and van with members listed. Auditor R A Robison C A of Winnipeg and R M Cardiff appointed secretary treasurer censensus enumerator and attendance officer.
