A dense digest of Dauphin Manitoba events from 1947 into 1948. It lists fires, building permits, school board decisions, floods, municipal matters, weather, fairs, and local leaders with dates from December to September. Named persons include S. Solomon, W. T. The Dauphin game and fish association seeks provincial action to regulate Lake Dauphin's water level amid a rapid fall. The town council backs the request and forwards it to regional boards while noting farmers were not consulted. Officials anticipate PFRA input in spring before any action.
At the rural council meeting Tuesday morning Bank of Ward 3 was named chairman of the public works committee, replacing Nichol Slyzuk who retired last month as Ward 2 councillor. Joe Tokar succeeds Slyzuk on Ward 2 and joins the finance committee. Other committee chairmen stay the same with the listed first names.
The Dauphin Library board of five members Mrs J N McFadden Mrs leitch Stewart Dr Adam Little John Slobodzian and Coun D E McLean were appointed by town council on Dec 30. The board operates under the provincial library act and oversees revenue from the one mill tax. Key talks covered library location possible in the memorial and community centre or Legion hall temporary space and the need for a reference library. The one mill levy is estimated to yield 2700 dollars.
Building permit data show 1948 totals at 333 110 with commercial and residential value up from 1947 by about 99 500. The year included school alterations and a health and welfare building adding 225 000 for a postwar peak of 458 530 while discussion of permit valuation accuracy led to a council referral to the town engineer for review.
New Hope that the Trans Canada Highway will pass through Dauphin grows after W J Ward reports to the board of trade that northern routing via Minnedosa Russell or Swan River is favored. The board plans a banquet with Hon. Errick Willis invited as guest speaker on the proposed route.
In his fourth inaugural address Bullmore urges redecorating the town hall and making the council chamber spectator friendly after removing library shelves. He proposes moving assessor and secretary treasurer offices, severing free auditorium use, and funding decor with a nominal $15 rental. The mayor welcomes Dr. C S Robertson as the new councillor.
The Herald notes a new approach to the front page weather box with data comparing current temperatures to last year. It recalls last week's lows and highs with temperatures reaching minus 27 on Tuesday night and a winter low of 27.4 on December 10, while this week totals 25 inches of snowfall, leaving a 17 inch snow depth.
The area school board agrees to loan ten windows to the D.M.C.C. to enclose the curling rink balcony. The windows, from airport use, are held for proposed school construction. Trustees expect at least eight of the 15 windows will be used in school buildings.
The Dauphin board of trade is replaced by the Dauphin chamber of commerce after a name change approved by the Governor General in council. The new designation became effective January 1.
McLean named deputy mayor after leading last fall's civic election and starting his eighth term. Anderson becomes head of the finance property and reception committee. Solomon retired. Johansen remains finance vice chair. McLean also becomes fire water and sewage chair. Others fill and rotate committee roles with meetings set for the second and fourth Mondays at 7 30.
Eight entries have been received from outside points for the 51st annual ponspiel. Rinks from Eden Neepawa Russell Gilbert Plains Grandview and twenty more have booked with local hotels. Extra accommodations may be needed for a record number of visitors and townspeople are invited to contact Charlie Fisher or Rod Dewar. Planning is complete for entertainment for visitors and locals during spiel week. Chairman Doc Robertson is confident Dauphin will provide a bang up bonspiel.
