Manitoba Lawyer Hryhorczuk Named Queen's Counsel in New Year List

Hon Michael N Hryhorczuk Manitoba attorney-general and Ethelbert MLA is among nine Manitoba lawyers named Queen's Counsel in the New Year list. The 50 year old Gilbert Plains native holds an Arts degree from the University of Saskatchewan and an LL B from Manitoba. He was called to the bar in 1931, served as school board chair for 20 years and reeve for four. He was first elected in 1949 and reelected in 1953. One other appointee this year is Swan River Magistrate T W Neelands, an Ontario native educated in Brampton.

Rural Council Committees Remain Unchanged For 1956

The rural municipality of Dauphin keeps its standing committees unchanged at the statutory meeting on Tuesday. Finance led by Reeve J Potoski with Councillors Forbes Bonk Seecord and R Seecord. Legislature to open January 31 in Manitoba

Manitoba lawmakers will convene on Tuesday January 31 to start the third session of the 24th Legislature. Premier Douglas Campbell announced the session, with about 116 bills expected, including the Liquor Enquiry Commission report and several grant requests totaling 32 000 for road and drainage projects in Dauphin.

December Wind and Snow Totals

December featured high winds and heavy snow with sunshine totaling 160.9 hours. The month recorded 7911 miles of wind, 360 miles in a 24 hour period, and westerly direction predominating. Snow measured 13.8 inches with 0.03 inches of rain water equivalent and 1.41 inches total precipitation. End-of-month snow depth was 20.3 inches. High and low temperatures reached 27.0 and -30.4 respectively. Mean maximum 58 and minimum 11.7 with an average mean temperature of -3.0.

Festive Season Temperatures Dip But Winds Bite

The weatherman notes two week period from December 21 to January 3 with temperatures not exceeding 28.1 degrees on New Year’s Day and a low of 17.2 degrees on December 22. The period’s readings compare favorably to last year’s same dates.

Town Council By-Election Set For Friday February 3

Mayor McLean ordered a by election after Councillor W T Sklepowich resigned from town council. Returning officer Eric C Day to call the vote for Friday February 3 with nomination on Tuesday January 24 between 1 and 2 pm for the one year unexpired term. Sklepowich's resignation was sent from Cloverdale British Columbia citing circumstances beyond his control.

4-H And Rural Youth Program Marks 1955 in Dauphin District

An extensive 4-H and rural youth program in Dauphin district highlighted 1955. Thirty six4 boys and girls belonged to 24 clubs with diverse projects in clothing foods beef calf seed grain garden potato and swine. The Dauphin Agricultural Society funded key events including a five day short course with 51 girls 66 boys and 18 trophies awarded. A fifth beef calf show and sale produced 34 calves sold at an average 18.75 cents per pound. an Aberdeen Angus steer owned by Rene Magnet Verdun won top carcass honors and a Winnipeg trophy. The rally drew 715 members and leaders from seven clubs with prize money doubled by federal grants.

Dwelling Destroyed By Fire on Mountain Avenue

A two storey home owned by Tony Komarinski on Mountain Avenue was destroyed by fire in the early hours of Friday. The volunteer fire brigade fought the flames for several hours. The dwelling had stood as a town landmark for about 50 years. The fire alarm was turned in at dawn.

Harold Scotchmer to Speak at Dauphin DMCC Meeting

Harold D. Scotchmer of Winnipeg will address the annual Dauphin Memorial and Community Centre DMCC meeting in the DMCC industrial building on Thursday Jan 12. He is Manitoba district live stock fieldman for the federal department of agriculture. Four DMCC board seats are up for election with three from the town and one from the rural municipality.
