Cold Week Surges to Subzero Temps in Dauphin

Dauphin town council sent seven resolutions to the Manitoba Urban Association ahead of its first annual convention in Winnipeg January 23–24. The items urge amendments to the Municipal Act covering council procedures, by law power over speed limits, vacancy term determinations, residency requirements for nominations, storm sewer and drainage authorizations, creation of a cash replacement fund with strict accounting, and coverage of provincial workers under unemployment insurance.

Bowman Named to Canadian Privy Council for Life
James L. Bowman K C of Dauphin becomes a Privy Councillor as Louis St Laurent approves the appointment on December 22. Bowman, former Dauphin MP and 1935 House speaker, joins George Black of Yukon as former speakers now on equal footing with other ex speakers. The move follows the end of their terms when their party was out of office. Bowman also escorted Manitoba curlers to Scotland for the Strathcona Cup tour, with 52 curlers nationwide, Bowman among them, and he spoke on a Montreal radio broadcast before departure.

Good Flow Of Water From Edwards Lake Reported By Engineer
Town engineer RS Everall reported at the 1949 final council meeting that Edwards Lake had a steady water flow with the reservoir full and no freezing. The meeting noted the lake’s spillway discharge and confirmed a good water supply for the town. The council accepted a $50 bid to sell the old fire truck and approved by laws canceling debts and refunds to three veterans on dwelling land purchases.
