Daily wire reports describe Danish saboteurs storming a factory, Polish provisional government declarations, and plans for another Big Three meeting. Updates cover German counterattacks near Budapest, Soviet progress, Greek coalition efforts, Italian front actions, and Canadian units in western Europe with multiple dates and locations across Athens Rome Paris and the Po Valley.
The oath of qualification was given to Councilor elect John A. Yurkin. Standing committees were formed with chairmen and vice chairs named. Appointed representatives to Cemetery board and Dauphin Youth Services council. H. P. Pollon appointed to town office staff awaiting discharge from the army. Pollon has prior service with Massey Harris and Manitoba Motor Transit.
A week of prayer is planned in Dauphin and district with nightly services at eight o clock from January 8 to 12. Each evening features a different church and speaker including the Salvation Army at the Baptist church Rev L A Mattitt Pentecostal church Rev J H Jenkins United church Archdeacon H E Bridgett Church of England Capt G Oystryk and Baptist church Rev C Barker.
Fire at the Salvation Army hall around 1 pm Christmas Day gutted the platform end and damaged the drum, with repairs estimated at $2000. Firemen arrived quickly after witnesses saw flames, saving the building from total destruction. The band instruments were placed on the platform after an early Christmas hospital visit.
A cold spell brought three fires in the past week. On December 30 a large shed burned at Pitch property on Railway Avenue across the river. The new year opened with a blaze in Dr. A S Little garage destroying a car and damaging the garage. On January 2 at 3:50 pm firefighters tackled a chimney fire at William Gallant’s residence on Third Avenue Southwest with no serious damage.
At the Ukrainian Peoples Home annual meeting on December 27 officers were elected for 1945. S Leskiw was named president with S Nataros as vice president Fe Rene as cashier F Kalin as secretary. Directors include Wm Grodzick S Gura J Duch A Ewachew ski M Podworny and auditors S Sametz Mrs J Duch P Sen chuk. P Cowton is business manager and Fred Chaykowski is building manager. Mrs J Duch named representative to the Citizens' Welfare Society.
Major Gavin Greig arrived in Winnipeg last week after three years with the Canadian army including a year in Italy. He and Mrs. Greig are in Dauphin to spend leave with her parents Mr. and Mrs. O. E. Roste.
Captain John Albert McFadden 26 of Dauphin Manitoba died December 16 from wounds received in Italy while serving with the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps overseas since July 1944. Born May 19 1918 he studied at Dauphin Collegiate Institute and the University of Manitoba Medical faculty. He joined the army after June 1942 medical internship at Vancouver General Hospital and was promoted to captain in March last year. He married Evelyn Brickley in 1942 and is survived by his wife, his parents and a daughter John Willawna Jean, and several siblings.
Mrs Meade Chase reports her son Pte Chase is in hospital with a head wound from a bomb fragment. He was previously wounded on August 8 in France when a bullet struck his thigh.
A H Marcon retires as manager of the Dauphin branch of the Canadian Bank of Commerce after 41 years in banking. He came from Regina in 1937 to replace Charles Padley, and with his wife has supported the Red Cross and Dauphin community groups. They leave Dauphin Thursday for Penticton and then the coast, with parting acknowledgments from local groups.
James W. Oliver is transferred from Killarney to become manager of the Bank of Commerce in Dauphin and arrived with his wife and daughter. His son Patrick attends the University of British Columbia, another daughter Geraldine accompanied the family, and a second daughter Eileen lives in Vancouver. Their elder son, Wm. Oliver, is listed as missing on active service overseas since last April.
The Dauphin Herald starts a weekly news service from the British United Press for Manitoba readers. It aims to cover hometown events and wider provincial news, leveraging B U P facilities. A summary of 1944 fire activity shows 58 calls by the local brigade up from 49 in 1943, with estimated property damage of 3710 dollars. Major blazes occurred April 19 at Fulkerson shed spreading to Gilmour’s Fifth Avenue property, destroying a stable, and December 25 at Salvation Army hall.
Town council completed year end business with the sale of the electric light and power system to the Manitoba Power Commission. The town will act as collector for one year at 100 dollars monthly and will provide 4200 watts of festoon lighting for a year. Water charges begin at five dollars daily until metered, then based on consumption. The commission will buy fuel and materials, plus two transformers, totaling over eight thousand dollars. Net hydro electricity costs are four thousand one hundred eighty five dollars and ninety cents annually.
