Justice Taylor Dies Suddenly at Home in City
Mr Justice Taylor of Portage la Prairie autopsied by special Act of Parliament in 1933, after forming a Portage law practice with J R Colwill in 1910 and becoming King’s Counsel in 1913. He was well known in Dauphin and presided at the Coffee Club table.

Brigade Responds Twice To Two Fires In Dauphin
The Dauphin fire brigade was called out twice Tuesday evening January 2. A chimney fire at ER M Smiths Fifth Avenue S W caused little damage. A bunkhouse at James Buchannon's rural subdivision north of the CN roundhouse was gutted, total loss of building and contents, crew remaining on scene until 10 15.

Ukrainians to Observe Christmas on Sunday
Ukrainians will mark Yuletide with a 12 course supper led by honeyed frarmenti as the first and most important dish. The feast recalls the 12 apostles and ends with carol singing after the first star appears, with hay or a sheaf of oats placed in the dining room.
Half holidays begin Thursday January 11 1940
Next week Thursday January 11 marks the first half holiday of 1940 under a town by law. If another holiday falls in the same week the Thursday holiday is canceled. January 4 has no holiday due to New Year. Dauphin stores will close at 9 p m on Saturday nights during the first quarter.

Curling Club Announces Annual Open Bonspiel Start Date
The curling club will begin its annual open bonspiel on February 26 to close the current season. Participants from the league will join. the event marks a novelty highlight in the curling calendar.

Retired Sea Captain Builds Precise Scale Model Ship
Retired Captain Phare of Dauphin owns a three foot three inch model ship he served in, crafted by hand to exact scale. The 27 inch mast and 12 inch main yard spread mirror his aboard experiences. He earned captain’s papers on a sailing ship and served as chief officer during the transition to steam.

Purse Snatchers Active on Fourth Avenue Saturday Night
Mrs. Wallace, walking home on Fourth avenue, was approached by two men who ran at her from behind and snatched her muff before disappearing. She could not give a full description and the incident remains under investigation.

Three Cattle Thieves Sentenced in Russell District
Wm. W. Ward Joe Prosavich and Joe A. Boyer of Russell district faced Little Saturday for cattle theft in the Russell Roblin area. Ward received two years Prosavich one year and Boyer six months in jail. Ward topped the group as ringleader with multiple concurrent six month terms. Magistrate Little urged the seriousness of the crime noting past vigilantism against rustlers.
