Elks Provincial Bonspiel Set for January 12 Here

The Elks Provincial Bonspiel is scheduled for Saturday January 12 with first draw at 5 p m and the finale on Sunday evening. Ernie Bennett chairs the committee with Leitch Stewart assisting. up to 36 entries last year and Portage led in 1945 with three rinks. Swaner staged the 1956 Classic Record entry as Winnipeg participants are expected to compete in multiple draws.

Rotary Club Meeting Daurphin December Carol Session

At the Dauphin Rotary Club meeting on December 24 Jack Henderson of CKDM brought a tape recorder to reproduce carol singing from the club’s carol festival. Canon T W Wilkinson received a disc of CKDM morning broadcasts. Several guests attended including A J Middleditch and Bill Robertson. Gordon Harrison spoke on the fire brigade’s work and a color oil warehouse movie was shown. Birthdays noted included Sam Katy.

Bridge Contract Lets for Trans-Canada Route

A $325 000 contract funds a pre stressed concrete bridge across the Assiniboine river west of Brandon to be completed next August as part of the Trans-Canada highway. The project marks the last major hurdle in Manitoba before perimeter roads around Winnipeg are finished.

Dauphin Opens Expanded Post Office and Civic Offices in 1956

The renovation on Second Avenue NW converts the old post office into town offices for the mayor secretary treasurer and assessor with council chambers on the main floor. The second floor houses the enlarged town engineering department with drafting room and an office for engineers. Space is shared with the chamber of commerce and civil defence, while the highways branch rents remaining second floor space. A third floor suite houses the permanent caretaker per contract.

Dauphin Curling Trio Wins Prep Press Bonspiel Title

Four youth curlers from DCTI led Dauphin to the Prep Press Manitoba high schools bonspiel victory, then posted three more wins to reach the provincial final series. Bunny Simall skips the undefeated rink with Norman Blaine third Tony Kowaluk second and Jerry Shumanski lead. They meet Henry Riendeau of Virden in a best of three set Feb 4 5 and 6 in Winnipeg for the provincial crown and Dominion representation.

Mayor Stewart F. McLean was sworn in January 3 marking a sweeping civic shift with three new councillors R W Dicks B Lacarux and C S Robertson joining the council. A by election was ordered for February 3 after councillor W T Sklepowich resigned, while rural council remained unchanged into 1956.

Weather Clumsy Forecast Brings Rain and Cold Snap

A prankster weatherman caused a spurt of rain during the quiet period, enough to disrupt travel. Christmas Day saw two inches of precipitation with frigid lows near minus twenty two. Temperatures fluctuated wildly through December, with light to moderate snow events and a sharp warm spell briefly lifting temperatures before colder air returned.

Youth Curling Jam-Pail Start Set for January 14

Recreation director Pat Kearney announced a community youth event named Jam-Pail curling begins January 14. Body building classes led by Brian Skinner run Saturdays 10 to 11 am, while boxing and tumbling with Dick Macdonald remain popular late Saturday morning in the town hall.
