The assessor completed the roll and the assessment for land and buildings. Totals show Ward 1 value 446 159 with 211 400 land and 234 750 buildings. Ward 2 tallies 844 925 with 313 925 land and 424 275 buildings. Ward 4 lists 624 625 total with 74 700 land and 549 925 buildings.
The Town Council met Wednesday with full membership. Committees were struck: Finance chaired by McDonald with McKay Skinner and Wallwin. Public Works chaired by McKay with MecLachlin Batty and Brewer. Police and Relief chaired by Walwin with Playford McLachlin and Batty. Water and Light chaired by Skinner with McDonald, Playford, and Brewer.
Dauphin delegates Darwin Chase and Oscar Tyndale file a Winnipeg report on the second Manitoba Older Boys Parliament. The account cites opened by Lieutenant Governor John Martin, speeches by Sir James Atkins and Premier Bracken, debates on the Speech from the Throne, a budget presentation, prorogation, and visits by notable speakers. It notes praise for the C.S.E.T. program and calls for youth to help raise standards and address societal issues. Swan River reports a 25 year old trapper from Whitehouse Iowa named Lewis fatally wounded by accidental discharge of a 36 gun while trapping north of Lake Winnipegosis. His partner Fish assisted him to Grand Rapids and then to Mafeking before dying en route. The body will be returned to Iowa for burial.
The McDonald family history notes Chas McDonald’s fiddle played at a Dauphin area settlers party. The piece recalls early dances, quadilles and cotillions, with Charlie as a skilled if imperfect fiddler, in a time when jazz did not yet exist.
Provincial police arrested David Marantz a Dauphin district merchant as he stepped from the Dolphin train. He is accused of neglecting to account for funds collected for Ogilvie Milling. Marantz, freed on bail, claimed no grounds for arrest and his lawyer called it spite work. A remand was set until Wednesday pending papers from Brandon. His wife accompanied him.
The Lieut Stuart Widmeyer Chapter LO.D.E. hosted the annual Rose Ball in Dauphin. A large crowd attended as several young ladies debuted in fine dresses. Mrs Lys directed striking hall decorations while McMurray's six piece orchestra provided music. Patronesses were Mesdames Widmeyer and J N Macdonald. At midnight the crowd joined hands and sang Auld Lang Syne.
Dauphin Fire Brigade members gathered at the Hamilton hotel last Friday to bid farewell to Blake Phillips. After a banquet hosted by Brierley, Chief Batty led speeches and presented Phillips with a ring. Wm. Blackadar attended as the brigade’s first chief. For the annual meeting E C Batty was reelected Chief and R C Smith, Fagen and Jas Oliphant retained their offices.
New Year’s curling drew crowds as Bowmen’s rink edged Dr. Trimble’s team in a close New Year afternoon match. Rinks featured GB Heaslip A Pollen Dr Harrington J L Bowman and A Bruce Dr Bell W Robson Dr Trimble.
Four town Sunday Schools gathered at Town Hall for a New Year starter service. Clergy like Mr Bates Anglican and Mr Hall Baptist led roll call and greetings, with Mrs Haddrell Salvation Army closing. Offering over $17 went to the Children's Aid Society.
A large crowd filled the Dauphin Mercantile Co store Saturday night to hear the contest winner for a new company name. Miss Evelyn Simpson suggested The Golden Rule, but the name may not be adopted by the firm.
The 24th anniversary of St James Presbyterian church will be celebrated on January 20 with Dr David Christie of Westminster Church Winnipeg as preacher. It is his first visit to Dauphin and many will welcome him warmly. The anniversary dinner follows on Monday January 21 in Ramsay Hall.
The Choral Society will perform Mendelssohn Elijah on Wednesday at the Dauphin Theatre with pipe organ by Ronald Gibson of Winnipeg. Rehearsals are under way with soloists Miss Gertrude Newton Mrs Ernest Mills Mr W Bradley and Mr R T Halliley from Winnipeg.

Other top marks include Edith Whitmore 84, Dorothy Bowell 96, Esther Hjalmarson 86, Willie Stainton 84.3, and numerous 70s across Grades XI to IX from multiple schools. Rev Dean Mathe officiated assisted by Rev J F Cross.
Evelyn May daughter of Mr and Mrs E Rhodes of Oohre River and Carman Edward Thompson of Detroit were married at St Clement's Church Toronto on the 25th ult Both formerly lived in Dauphin Mrs Thompson worked with the Bank of Nova Scotia for several years
On Thursday December 27 at the home of Mrs. Wm. Baird in Dauphin Alma Peterbaugh eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Peterbaugh and F Earl Machan were united in marriage by Rev. Philip Duncan. Miss Gertrude Thompson was brides maid and Joseph Clarke was grooms man. A dance followed at the bride's home and the couple will reside in Dauphin.
Mr. and Mrs. William Winters of Dauphin district hosted a silver wedding anniversary on Friday December 21. Guests included Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Farrell, Mr. and Mrs. Robi Farrell, Mrs. W. Winters, Mr. and Mrs. Keefer, Mr. and Mrs. Jos. Winters, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Bell, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Winters, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Graham, Mr. and Mrs. John Winters, Mr. and Mrs. F. Siddle, Mr. Elgin Winters, Mr. Jos. Meredith, Mr. N. McLean, Miss Orpha Buchanan, and Miss Marjorie Marr. The couple received many beautiful silver presents.
Ethelbert municipality farmers shift from grain to mixed farming. Most farms remain under a quarter section. Dairying grows and cream is shipped daily. Hog raising shows the sharpest rise with hog shipments increasing from 3,000 dollars two years ago to over 23,000 dollars this year.
The Manitoba weeds commission and Manitoba union of municipalities will tour the province in January to discuss weed control with local councils. The six speakers travel in three teams led by Dr. S. A. Bedford and include George Bathe Professor T J Harrison D D McDonald J W Mitchell and S R Henderson. In Dauphin district the itinerary lists Swan River McCreary Reblin Gilbert Plains Dauphin and Gladstone from January 5 to 12.
The Herald recalls a resident with a first name start Me who paid taxes twice at the Secretary Treasurer’s office. A trio of councillors with Me initials were discussed on the street corner, prompting laughter about their generous cash aid and their Scotch blood.
The first Dauphin District Boys' Board meeting of the year, called by Rev. FE G Smith of Gilbert Plains, will be Tuesday 8th at 8 p.m. in the Presbyterian church basement. Invitations extend to the Dauphin District Boys' Council and a Provincial Boys' Board member to help plan for Father and Son Week, National Athletic Meet, Budget and other live issues. Ministers in the Cc S E T work and their boy workers are invited.
The Week of Prayer begins Tuesday the 8th with Baptist Church services led by Rev. Philip Duncan. On Wednesday the 9th Ensign Merrett will oversee the Methodist Church service, and Thursday the 10th Rev. T. Neville conducts. Friday the 11th features Presbyterian Church with Rev. Duncan Ritchie in charge.
The G W V A sends New Year wishes and reminds members of the January 9 regular meeting. A card party and dance occur tonight. The provincial command reports hundreds of pension and veteran claims awaiting settlement, urging members to fund and support the effort and keep dues paid. Comrade updates note Sean Darlington's new home and J Pilgrim's medical treatment in Ninette with best wishes for health.
A town rumor claims Coun. Brewer evicted a woman and is now facing a charge. Brewer emphatically denies knowledge of the case before the council on the 27th ult and asks the public to note he is not the person responsible, acknowledging possible name confusion.
J L Bowman of Dauphin joins about a dozen provincial lawyers by appointment as King’s Counsel announced by Winnipeg Law Society on Monday. Bowman practiced since 1910 mostly in Dauphin, ran the firm after James Harvey’s retirement, and has been a leading figure in law and public life as mayor and sports patron.
The Local Council of Women will meet Monday evening January 7 at 8 p.m. in the Rest Room. The meeting is public and Mrs Speechley will spend Monday and Tuesday in town for this cause. A cordial invitation is extended to the public to hear her Monday evening.
The Canadian National Railways announces a new winter timetable effective Sunday January 6. Dauphin is affected only by trains No 9 and No 10, with No 9 to Winnipeg cancelled on Saturday nights and No 10 from Dauphin to Winnipeg canceled at 3 15 AM on Mondays.
The St Andrew's Society held a Hogmanay social and dance on Monday December 31. When the bells rang the old year in, attendees sang A Guid New Year to one and aw. The night featured bagpipes fiddles reels and shottishes with a martial procession at about 2 30 am led by the piper.
With the onset of cold weather the wood market remains active. Street prices show Poplar poles four to five dollars per load, Poplar cord wood five dollars per cord, Oak seven dollars per cord, Tamarac seven dollars, and Spruce six dollars per cord.
Six boxes of chocolates will be given to holders of lucky numbers at the Dauphin Theatre next Monday night January 7.
The La Verendrye Chapter I O D E will hold its regular monthly meeting on Friday January 4 at 3 30 p m in the Ramsay Wright building to nominate officers for the year 1924.
