Outside rinks enter Dauphin bonspiel including Eaton club

Several more entries from outside rinks have been received for the Dauphin bonspiel set for January 13 to 18. A Winnipeg Eaton curling club rink marks the first entry from outside Winnipeg. Local hotels report 15 rinks registered, with equal visiting entries expected as last year. Prize lists are prepared and mailed to donors and teams, and will be displayed in Eaton’s window after this week.

Council by law and veteran refunds outlined in notices

Future parking ban beside the freight warehouse on First Avenue Southeast follows new by law. A by law authorizing a 50 percent refund of town lot purchase prices to veterans was passed, with only five applications to date. The council will post a public notice inviting organizations to apply for town grants before budgeting.

Extreme Cold Ends Year With Record Snowfall

After a week of subzero temperatures the year closed with a low of minus 33.3 on December 31. Snow fell heavily over four days totaling 4.49 inches with 1.75 on Christmas Day 48 inches on December 26 and smaller amounts on December 27 and 28.

The Dauphin Travellers' club selects four contestants Vi Clarke Yuela McDonald Doreen Pitcher Jean Smith to vie for the Ice Carnival queen title. Supporters sell tickets that grant votes, with first count Jan 20 and second on Feb 15, leading to the crowning on March 1 at the skating rink.

Fire Brigade To Decide On Blowing Wards

The Dauphin volunteer fire brigade will decide if wards should be blown during a fire. The board of trade asked the town council to blow wards to inform business owners which ward is on fire. They proposed using a siren then a whistle at the power station, but most discussion opposed blowing wards and the decision was referred back to the brigade.

Telephone Call Bridges Dauphin and New Zealand

Dr Owen McGuirk and family spoke with his brother Jack McGuirk a New Zealand rancher in what may be the first Dauphin to New Zealand telephone link. The call occurred around noon Canadian time Sunday, 5 am Monday in New Zealand, with excellent reception. The brothers have not seen each other since World War I. Jack’s sheep station lies in the birthplace district. Weather note: Dauphin sees nearly 30 degrees below zero as Jack’s family holidays at the beach.

No Special Awards For 44 A and B Area Schools Pooling Assets

In Dauphin Ochre Area No 1 all 44 A and B category school boards agreed to pool their assets for 1947 with the large area board of trustees. Hon J C Dryden attended and named two assessors to value properties ensuring fairness, as discussions favored pooling with possible future awards if needed.

Hockey Season Opens As Midgets Face Juveniles

The Dauphin Midgets under 16 open season January 2 against the Gilbert Plains Juveniles under 18 in the local arena. Coached by Bill McCulloch and "Trigger" Love the Midgets aim to defend their championship-record with a strong lineup after reaching last year’s playoffs.

Peter Cowtun Sells Store At Eighth and First

Peter Cowtun sells his Red and White store at Eighth Avenue and First Street S.W. to I. Newton of Regina with ownership transfer on January 2. Cowtun emigrated from Ukraine in 1904 and built a business career in Dauphin and Winnipeg before moving to Regina. Newton, a longtime manager of the Neway store in Regina, takes over with 15 years of retail experience.
