Death of Decphin resident Joshua Law announces funeral plan

Joshua Law of Decphin aged 73 died after a stroke following a night decline. Born in Rainham Ontario he lived in Neepawa Dauphin and Winnipeg, worked as miller and painter, and was a United Church member with a service at Dauphin United Church on Thursday January 1. He leaves a wife three sons and two daughters, with one son Bert predeceased. Funeral will be at Riverside Cemetery with pallbearers listed.

The G B W A St Pauls Anglican Church held its annual meeting at Mrs G F Goddards home on December 29 with a lively session. The treasurer reported strong interest and a successful year. officers for 1931 were elected: President Florence Moppett Vice President Dorothy Shaw Secretary Town Assistant Secretary Katherine Smith Treasurer Unn Clyde Margery La Verendrye. Chapter plans a January 2 meeting at 2 20 in Oddfellows hall with officer nominations til then.

Porter Golden Anniversary Celebrated in Spruce Creek

Mr and Mrs Jacob Porter of Spruce Creek Dauphin observed their golden wedding anniversary on December 29 1880 in Stratford Ontario and later moved to Manitoba. A reception for family and friends included a four story gold and silver wedding cake, with gifts from local lodges and societies. The couple have eleven children and twenty six grandchildren.

Debating Club Organizing In Town

A group of men met Monday to discuss forming a men's debating club. They planned a meeting at St James Church basement next Monday January 5 to organize officers and begin weekly debates.

Dauphin Train Service Reduced To Tri-Weekly

A railway service change at Dauphin takes effect January 11. Train No. 15 running Winnipeg to Dauphin will operate Tuesdays Thursdays and Saturdays, while No. 16 Dauphin to Winnipeg will run Mondays Wednesdays and Fridays. No trains to or from the Pas will run on those days. W R McCormack is named census enumerator for the Dauphin district in the 1931 census.

Dr Owen McGuirk Elected Secretary of Dauphin Agricultural Society

At a special Dauphin Agricultural Society meeting Dr Owen McGuirk was chosen secretary manager to replace resigned Robert Hawkins. The vote followed a committee’s recommendation and ballot. George W. Cornwall was named delegate to the Winnipeg agricultural societies convention January 27 to 29, with society officials attending Western Canada Fairs.

Ethelbert Agricultural Society Seeks Marketing and Tariff Changes

A large turnout at the Ethelbert Community Hall heard resolutions calling for freer markets for farm produce, duty-free British goods via Hudson Bay, and federal action to support farm prices and Old Age Pensions. Resolutions target government belief and trade links with Great Britain to aid Western Canadian farmers.

Dauphin AOUW Beats Winnipeg 7 4 in Fast Hockey Clash

In front of seven to eight hundred fans at the local rink, Dauphin AOUW defeated Winnipeg 7 to 4 in a high speed contest. Dauphin led after the second period and expanded their advantage as the game progressed with standout play from Herb Leech Norm Yellowlees and Scotty Steele, while Winnipeg fought to the end with Willis and Fraser swapping heroic saves.

Skating Arena Schedule January 1 to January 7

A week of skating and hockey events at the rink outlines daily sessions from New Year’s afternoon through midweek with youth teams and a No 1 Scouts versus Monarchs hockey night.
