Area Board Reviews Financing At Closed Meeting
The Area Board met with auditor E. M. McCullagh of Winnipeg in a closed session to discuss finances. A $70,000 loan for current expenses was approved against 1949 tax revenue, and a $10,000 reserve fund loan for Ochre River group to fund a two room Ochre school addition. Petty Thefts Reported At Rink
Reporting from the Herald, petty thefts and break ins occurred at the curling rink during the tenspiel. Eleven lockers were broken into with about 15 dollars in damage, plus another five dollars in recent damage. Cigarettes were stolen from the lunch bar on frequent occasions, most recently last weekend with about 25 dollars lost. RCMP investigations are underway at the town station.

Fire destroys Gilbert Plains hotel and stores
Fire swept through Mike Paziuk’s commercial hotel in Gilbert Plains causing about 60 000 dollars in damage. Paul Drosdowech’s house furnishing store and other nearby businesses were damaged with partial insurance coverage. Firefighters battled the blaze from 5 45 p.m. Sunday to 6 a.m. Monday, rescue efforts in the hotel basement nearly trapping two firefighters.

Dauphin Youth Dies After Basement Fall at Grange Cafe
William Stepa Jr. of Dauphin, 24, died at General hospital from a skull fracture after falling down the basement stairs of the Grange cafe Saturday evening while reportedly intoxicated. He was unconscious from the fall and died Monday. No witness to the accident. Survived by Ontario-based parents. No inquest planned, says district coroner Dr. R E Dicks.

The town parks board approved a 1949 budget of 3489 with a 119 increase over last year due to a higher assessment.
