Air disasters unfold with at least two dead and many injured after an inland crash near the East River following takeoff from LaGuardia. Three Canadians listed as missing. Additional crashes involve US Air Force jets and a transport plane causing further fatalities and injuries across multiple locations including California and England.
Tom Poole aged 103 celebrated his birthday on Feb 2 at St Pauls home with friends including J S Oliphant Sr and John Gardner. Guests delivered congratulatory messages from local figures and organizations. Poole, likely Manitobas oldest man, enjoys good health and plans to resume town trips come spring.
The Dauphin Figure Skating Club will host an Ice Carnival on March 9 featuring a 20 minute speed skating and barrel jumping act by Gordon Audley and Bill Ponting. Audley, famed for Olympic bid participation and a bronze medal for a Canadian 500 metre record, partners with Ponting, Manitoba and Canadian champion in 1956. The routine splits into a five minute ice sprint and fifteen minutes of barrel jumping.
Temperatures stayed below zero for the week with a -34.2 degree low on Thursday and a weekly average of -13.7 below. Only 2.2 inches of snow fell, winds reached 27 mph from the southwest on February 1, with similar gusts of 26 and 24 mph on the following days.
Erik M. Krogh a NATO Danish Air Force student pilot stationed at Macdonald airport was killed when a 7T33 trainer crashed about four miles east and 1.5 miles south of Dauphin shortly after noon Tuesday. Debris spread over 400 yards. the impact blackened land two feet deep. The body was taken to a funeral home and then to Winnipeg with Coroner Dr. R E Dicks releasing it to RCAF officials for further handling. Investigation into the crash continues.
The RCMP annual policing report for 1956 calls the crime situation in the district quiet. It notes more complaints than 1955 but says this does not imply higher crime, with liquor control convictions rising yet fines down due to a minimum-fine removal. Revenue climbed to 4382 dollars and total investigations reached 1350, including 287 unfounded.
Due to tremendous popularity the film War and Peace based on Tolstoy's novel will show a special 2 pm matinee today. Since its premiere last Thursday in Dauphin the public could not be accommodated at evening performances.
Dr R E Dicks was named president of the Dauphin Rotary Club for the 1956-57 year. Dorland Palmer becomes vice president. New directors elected are Judge D A Ross and J E Burton for a two year term. Retiring directors are Al Bird and Dorland Palmer, with Murry Gamblin and Don Grant completing the second half of their terms.
Negotiations between the Dauphin-Ochre area board and district No 3 of the Manitoba Teachers’ Society reached a stalemate Monday night over the basic salary. The board proposed 2300 a month for all teachers, while the teachers’ executive would not settle for less than 2500. If no agreement is reached, conciliation and arbitration are planned steps.
Dauphin unveils a 220000 dollar Mackenzie composite high school addition with an air conditioned, soundproof auditorium and six classrooms. The opening featured civic and provincial officials, a dedication by Rev. D G Ray, and a program including music, speeches, and a ribbon cutting by S Warner.
Albert Joan Middleditch retires after forty six years with railroading at the CNR offices on Feb 4. A. B. D. Shackleford and W. N. Wilkinson presented thanks from the railroad and fellow workers in a ceremony led by E. S. Barber and W. A. Pridgen. Middleditch’ s dramatic career began in London with theatre schooling and performances at the Colliseum and Hypodrome, later linking him to Gillie Burke and Stanley Lupino.
The Monday start for the 1957 bonspiel draws several entries including Vic Wilson Gilbert Plains Hugh McKenzie Deer Lodge and John Bidt Ochre River. Twenty four entries recorded six outside and 18 local with closing 8 am Saturday Feb 9 and play at 10 am Monday. Official opening Monday evening with banquet Wednesday. Leitch Stewart chairs the committee with Art Halliday secretary and Ed Johansen running the draw.
The Virden rink led by Bunny Small lost the best of three to Henry Riendeau from Virden in a Manitoba Curling Association bonspiel playdown. The opening game ended 14-9 after Riendeau built a big first-half lead. the deciding second game finished 11-10 as Small’s team fought back with a late three-ender.
Dauphin Kings visit Pine Falls Paper Kings for a postponed league clash aiming to narrow the gap to Minnedosa Jets. Both teams arrive off recent wins and seek a crucial victory to climb in the standings with the Kings boasting a 5-1 win over the Jets.
The Canadian Players presented Othello at the town hall, delivering a stark tale of jealousy and manipulation. Max Helpman as Iago and Dawn Greenhalgh as Desdemona led a strong cast in a spare, effectively lit production that drew a transfixed, hushed audience and high praise from critics.
